I recently have been asked to paint a logo and kennel name on a huge boulder. I would like some pointers on how to prepare the boulder for painting and what paint is the best to use. I am in the Northeast and winters can be quite harsh. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Currently I am using One Shot Paints but don't know if they are the best for this kind of job. Thanks Joe Harvey Fredonia NY

Joe,
One Shot should be just fine. Prep as for any other "wall" surface. Steel brush if necessary, good cleaning agent, and degreaser if near a busy road which may indicate petroleum airbornes. Allow extra drying time for cleaning agents and degreaser in case stone is more porous than you think. Paint just like you would a block wall.

If the customer wants to spend a little more, this is a good one for sandblasting. You can either rent a setup, or sub out the blast to exterior sandblast outfit. Then paint as before.

Good luck.

I have painted a rock before and enjoyed it very much. Clean the rock, use a pounce pattrern, foam brushes and 1-shot and it will do fine, harsh weather or not. Its cold today in Michigan.
