I recently got to make some "bug" sculptures for a children's museum here in Lynchburg, mainly out of Precision Board. The building is very old and has some lettering on the side that reads "Death to all insects". Many years ago it used to be a hardware store of sorts that sold insecticide. The museum, inside and out, has played on the history of the building combining the new with the old. To teach the children to respect insects not kill them, they hired me to create the sculptures and install them on the wall. The "bugs" are an ant, that has a paint brush for a tail, and a scorpion that has a paint spray can for a body. The scorpion will be shooting the word RESPECT over the word Death on the wall in neon tubing. The neon is being handled by another sign company here in town. The tail on the ant was made hollow originaly to cut back on materials and for the weight factor, but we also used it as a time capsule of sorts. We put in a newspaper from Sept. 12,2001 (to show what was going on in the world as he was being built), some company flyers, business cards, ect. We wraped it up and everyone in the shop signed the package. The museum wanted us to document every step we took making the bugs so they could use the pictures either in a display or when teaching art classes to the children. They wanted to turn it into a learning experience for the children as well. Pretty neat I thought. Anyway, the local paper did a big article on me and the bugs, and I thought some of you might think it's interesting too. Here is a link to a photo album that shows how they were made and installed.
We are now beginning to make a "dragonfly" that will rest on top of the tin roof, 6 stories in the air. The wing span on him will be almost 45 feet and from head to tail will be over 20 feet long! Sorry this is so long, hope you enjoy.
