I am working on a Smalts sample/Christmas present for my brother in law that owns a tattoo parlor.
This is 15 lb sign foam, with the background routed out. I painted it black, and applied black one shot and smiths cream 50/50 mix. The smalts was given to me by Michael Clanton. He had won it in one of the drawings right here on Letterville, but he doesn't use it, so he generously sent it to me, and asked that when I used it, post up photos here.
Now I am going to gild silver leaf on the letters and the pinup girl in the center.
I was a little worried about applying the silver leaf after the smalts, but it worked out well...

Always great to see smalts being used! It appears that the smalt used in your pictures are obsidian and not true glass. Glass smalt will reduce "mounding" you will find with obsidian applications. However, the price difference may be the factor. We have a step-by-step for those who wish to dable in smalts on our website.
Happy Smalting!! Keith
