I was in S. Lake Tahoe today and managed to get some photos of a casino restaurant sign I designed a couple of years ago. The cabinet is curved and attached to the ceiling. Wood laminate over aluminum. Letters & floating shapes are routed medex with distressed copper laminate on the faces. Led halo light. Bottom inset panels have 3Form acrylic to match the the restaurant decor. Small letters are push thru with copper laminate. This was a fun project. I hardly ever get to see these things after they go out the door.

That is classy Brent. Is that glow LED or Neon. Sorry if that is a dumb question, I have little knowledge of electric sign work. Thank you for posting in the Portfolio.

You're welcome Bob. It's been a few years since I've posted anything here! It's led lighting. The letters are too thin for neon. They are 1" thick medex. The back of the letters are hollowed out and have white led's taped inside. There is also a white plex diffuser over the led's on the back of the letters and I think we had to install a dimmer as well. The push thru letters have led's behind them inside the curved cabinet.

ian, not to jump in on brent's reply, (nice work) ....but medex ia great for "interior" only application.....a smooth partical sawdust board. i used it in place of mdo years ago. never use it for exterior applications....is will swell like a dry spong in the rain.

Great sign, of course it was done by you. I wouldnt expect anything but spectacular. But I gotta ask, how are the "Restaurant" letters being held and what is keeping the centers on the R's a As? "I gotts ta know!"

Looks great. I've never used LED lighting, might have to give it a go some time, maybe on my house number. So the push through letters are cut of thick acrylic and pushed into corresponding holes in the aluminum? Do they have a ridge routed into them so they stop at a certain distance?

Good guess Kelly. Yes they have a ridge, that's the common method of fabrication for these types of faces. I think these were routed from 3/4" clear leaving an 1/8" ridge. There is white translucent diffuser vinyl on the back. The cabinet is alum. with wood grain laminate and internal led's behind the push thru. Next time I post one of these I'll show the shop drawing along with the picture.
On my first sketch I had condensed art deco looking letters for "Latin Soul" with an oversized circle "O" in Soul. I had a clear window in the O so you could see thru the sign... kind like a round window. They didn't like it and made me use the type they had on the menus. I managed to sneak in the the tall deco looking "S" I drew and they liked it.
They've got another restaurant called "The Timbers" that I'm working on now. It will be flat cut out letters on a wood wall under a skylight. They want a rustic look.
