I haven't posted in awhile and really had a hard time loading this time...finally...I need to do this more often so I can remember...the sign is double-sided HDU...the tree is plastic...cast from a clay original I made back around Christmas...this was my first mold...was an interesting process but quite alot of work...however this was the 5th and 6th tree I've used so far from the mold...so the time and expense on the mold are paying off.

I am impressed that while the tree is perfect it ties in with the overall package. Rusty, I am impressed with the overall appearence including the post treatment the angled caps pull my eye in rather than away. This is SignCraft worthy my friend.

A piece worthy being a teaching example and a fine example of how signs should communicate.

Thanks guys for the encouraging comments...several people seemed to have liked the post installment...here's a diagram that might help if you want to use it...I recess the lag bolts but I think they would probably look good not recessed as well...they are big lags but I cant remember the size...the cluster of 3 6x6s on the ends give a real stout look that I like...though only 1 is in concrete...I screw and glue a 2x6 to the bottom of the sign and 1x6's on each end as well...1/4" lags go through the 1x6's and into the posts...I like to extend the sign about 24" above ground...hope this helps if anyone wants to use this idea.

Thanks so much for the illustration. It's one that will be printed out and added to my files!

So Beautiful & well thought out from layout, design/shape, colours, they all work so well. The tree is amazing; the detail and depth makes me curious about your process of a mold made from a clay original. This is one that would make me stop and get close up to try and figure it out....is it sandblasted, cnc routed, hand carved or maybe a combination? Yup, I'd be touching this one.....
Thank you for sharing.

Rita...it's sandblasted HDU through my homemade grain frame...and the tree was a clay sculpted piece...42" wide...from which I made a silicone mold into which I poured a liquid plastic...as I understand now...the silicone mold is the most expensive way to go...but since I had unknowingly made my original from water based clay...I had to go silicone and could not use urethane for the mold even though I had purposely made it with no undercuts thinking I would be making a rigid mold...the urethane would have cost about half as much I'm told...in the future I will only use oil based clay for originals...I loved working with the clay...the ability to add and subtract to your piece is a luxury not afforded in carving HDU...although Magic Sculpt would allow one the same versatility as clay...I knew I had to make at least 4...so I went with the mold...always wanted to make one anyway...however because I used waterbased clay...when the original dried out...it crumbled into a hundred pieces and no longer exists...live and learn.

Since you lost your original, Rusty, you just might want to cast one more plastic tree and set it aside (to make a new mold) in case you loose or wear out the mold you do have. Just a thought.

Joe...thanks...good idea...hey I really need some advice from you on my next job...2 relief landscapes 2'x6'...I know you are famous for your little carved landscape jewels...the principles should be the same...just bigger...I'd really like to peruse your portfolio before starting.
Little, , I've made em up to 7' long and 6" deep. But you are right.....the principal is the same. Problem is, 2D pictures won't tell you a lot.....we should really talk. I follow a basic process that is based on percentages (percentages is a bad term actually, it's more like relationships) which applys to any size. It's easier to explain than to type. I do have some side view pics of some of my work that might help.
Call, anytime!

That is one beautiful sign. The phone number panel looks out of place and not nearly nice enough for that sign. It detracts from otherwise perfection.
