Wow Joe, That face and helmet feathers look great. I can just feel the chisles in my hands! Love it! That lettering looks like is was a little difficult around the outer edge with the curve.

The head and circle are both mahogany. The circle was stained with Minwax mahogany stain......trying to get some contrast. As it turns out, after several years, the head will be just about the same color as the ground because it will develop a patina. The ones I did seven years ago bears that out.
John, carving those letters on the curve was the easy part. That piece of mahogany was supposed to be Honduran....it was more like Philipine with the grain switching dramatically in streaks. I had to, in some cases, switch the direction of cuts within the same letter......that would be impossible with a cnc.
BTW, the wood for just the two circles cost $300.......10 bf. However, I find that 10% for materials is acceptable.
