A customer came in yesterday and wanted to get some custom decals made for his snowmobile. He calls it Naegling, which is apparently the name of one of Beowulf's swords. Google searches showed images of the sword in a wide variety of styles, so I'm winging it with this sketch. The blade probably needs to be longer. Any sword experts out there?

My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone.

I kinda like the short wide bladed version better Russ.

Really like the style you've done - including the gnarly chipped edges! You can tell that THAT sword has gone to the bone a few times! LOL.

Keep 'em coming man! Love to see your creations.

Nice sketch Russ.

I like the elongated version It's more dramatic and has a nice visual weight to it.
looks like you had fun designing it.

Russ; cool dude, sounds like a challenging project, nothing to good for you, heheheh....

Sword pictured is a "fighting" version, telltale sign is reversed guard, which was to lock blades w/other blades...it's usually shorter than a regular "broad" sword as they were swung from the weak hand position as a second weapon in close fighting...nicks aren't from bone as bone won't chip steel, they are from contact from other steel blades, more than likey in a parrying move...only thing I see that isn't quite accurate is bloodlets usually don't start before first third of blade, starting at point...

Good luck, post results and have fun... [Cool]

I like the top one better. Looks more manly mannish...

Nice lettering. I can see that becoming a fon.... fon... letterstyle for computer use in the future.

Your work is impressive.

Nice job Russ. Both the illustration and the lettering are top notch.

I'm no sword expert but the bottom one looks a little light in the handle. I would think swords would have to be somewhat balanced to be used properly, so I like the top one better, but the bottom one with a slightly beefier handle would look good too. Love the letter style.

Russ, that's an awesome letter style. I sure would have tough time bending that in neon. But it sure would look good.

I defer to Frank; sounds like he has TWO copies of Braveheart! Jake has one that turns blue when midgets come around.

Thanks very much for all your responses. I haven't done any more with the drawing because I've been waiting for the customer to come back in. We're doing some other signs for him, so I'll see if he's been in to check on them.

Frank, if the customer likes the direction I'm moving in, I'll make the edit you suggested and see if you think it's better.

Hey Russ, looks awesome. I prefer the first, looks a little beefier and more embellished. I would think if its going on a snowmobile, it should looks more "AWESOME!" than "accurate."

Also, would you share your method of sketching/inking/scanning and what you use (i.e. charcoal pencil, india ink, etc)? I'm always interested to see how others work. Thanks!!
