So last year around this time I posted a design that I was entering in an annual Chili Fest that is held on Martha's Vineyard. I can't cook chili, so I enter the t-shirt contest part instead. I didn't win, but I did find out they only have 5-10 entries each year, so the odds are pretty good. This is the first draft of my entry for this year. (It says 2009 because the winning shirt is sold at the next years contest.) By the way, the lobster is the logo of the radio station that sponsors the event. Any ideas/critiques?

Also, here's last years winner:

Ok Chris,

I'll take a shot at this.

First off it says political to me. nothing to do with chili, next there is no flow to your design. When I first looked at it, I didn't know where to start, where to go next or what it all meant.

Sorry if it sounds harsh, just trying to be helpful.

...But, I can see where you could want it to look political, and this IS the big political year.
...I don't know if you are seeking criticism on this, but could it be designed using (say, perhaps) two fonts instead of five?

Chris,

You have a great idea here! I do have some suggestions and hope you're not offended by them.

-I agree the font count is heavy, could you lose the seriffed font in the radio station's name and go with a slightly bolder version of the sans-serif letters they proceed?

-The appendages on the lobster could follow suit with the other critters and be red as well.

-I would also suggest swapping the colors on all your copy, including the stars and "2009" below "Big Chili Contest" You could also put the word "BALLOT" in red letters.

-Subconciously, this would acheive two things. the emphasis would be on the main thing, and the "2009" line with the stars would look more traditional in keeping with the blue stars and less rebellious on a patriotic level.

Looks great Chris! Nice design.
