This may not look like much on the surface, but to me it marks a HUGE step forward in signs- this is the result of my silk screening and more practice on gilding (with the magnificent Dave Smith tip, no less!) Now, on to the next piece ( a bit cleaner, for sure...! LOL!)

Screen Printing is a challenge in itself. Screen Printing on Gold is a few notches up yet again. What parts did you print and what parts if any did you brush? I'm curious about your step by step procedure and what materials you used? I'm impressed with your effort, and yes, it does get easier with practice. Take good notes and pictures for future reference. It's amazing how quickly we forget important details. Don't toss your practice pieces, they are a great reference and inspiration to you as you progress. Those Smith tips are amazing, but learning to use a gilder's tip is very important too and is an art in itself. Way to go Cloudy!!!

Hey, Duncan= I deal with a tip (or a fitch on occaision...) but thought for full sheets I'd use Dave's. What is gold was screen printed over water gilding. The centers are size gilded. The whole thing (after touch-ups) was painted with black back-up enamel. I also made myself a small scraper from a bit of bandsaw blade to clean up edges- each end is sharpened, one being much smaller than the other to get into small spaces.
And on to the next practice piece!!!!! (bits of gold leaf all over the place, as well!)

Cat, Try the steel hanger part of Pendaflex files to make small custom triming chisels. Flat file and a small diamond stone and you can get them just like you want them. Exacto kit in the box has a few squared off blades also. They sharpen nicely with a fine diamond stone also.

I got a nasty email asking if I was too cheap to buy regular eXacto blades. I should probably have explained further my reasoning in my suggestion to Cat. The steel used in eXacto blades is of high quality and very hard. It will on occasion scratch the glass. The steel used in the pendaflex hangers is softer. It will take a shape easily and very sharp edge with little or no chance of scratching the glass.
