The clear I used is Nason, made by Dupont (their inexpensive line). It is a two part clear. 4:1 ratio.
Nason (green and yellow cans) 496-00 Clearcoat 483-79 Activator
I brushed it on with a #8 quill.
This stuff dries pretty quickly, so it's tough to brush on an area larger than 3-4" in diameter. You have to keep a wet edge, or it gets gummy quickly. The pot life is nice and long though.
It could be scratched with a fingernail within the first day or two, but after that, it seems very tough, and unable to leave marks in it.
I did a few other guitars with it, and the people said it holds up really well.
Thanks again.
Peace, Bob

Anne, using a dowel or arbor w/soft velvet attached, you spin velvet in a pattern over leaf after burnishing to create a overlapping star pattern that resembles "engine-turning" of the 20's-30's found on dashboards of expensive cars of that era, nice effect...Signgold uses effect for their version...looks like circles and stars, damn cool when done right...

Anne, you just took me outside of my knowledge limits, I'm just a babe n' the woods when it comes to water gilding, I can do it, learned from one of the best, Isador Posner, but; I haven't done enough to consider myself remotely qualified to answer that question...
What I can do is give you my opinion from observations over time and space...I've seen spun gold on glass, glass of which has to be done in reverse, somehow; how is what I don't know, but I've seen it and you know what they say about if it looks like, smells like, walks like, it must be a duck!!! Yes, I'd almost assurdedly say yes, it would apply there too...maybe someone smarter than the two of us, will feel pity and further splay me w/the true story or answer, as it may be...Kent, Ron, David???

Anne, just like Frank said. Just about any soft, to semi-coarse cloth will work. For a "soft" spin, I use velour, and for a more pronounced spin, I use velvet. The velour makes a nice fine looking burnish, where as the velvet will leave more noticable swirls. (if that make sense).
If I use a soft spinner, it takes more spins (maybe using a cordless drill to lightly spin it), where velvet only takes hand pressure with a 1/2 to 3/4 spin.
Different diameter spinners for different size letters. I just did a sign with letters that were 18" high. I used a spinner about 6" in diameter. For 2-3" letters, I use a 1-2" diameter spinner.
I know very little about water gilding, and now I am curious about spinning gold on glass.
Peace, Bob
