I have a client coming in later today to approve a new subdivision entrance sign. It needs a few more minor tweaks.
The base will be fabricated in Sto (foam). The panel will be routed out of HDU with raised bevel letters and goldleafed. The background will be black smalts including the recessed design panels in the columns. The line between "Edge Level" and "Crossing" will be in 12k white gold. The inline border will be in dark warm grey and the outer border will be black. The white space is the recess that will receive the panel. This will be a single-sided sign.
I think the columns are a bit overbearing for the panel shape. I do like how you carried the panel shape over to the columns.
The letter style choice is nice but I feel the underlapping strokes lack definition. The "D" and the "G" together are doing a little funky thing, too. However, I suspect that many letterstyles would do that on that particular kerning pair.
Overall, I like the understated feel. Big without being gaudy. Hope you sell it!

The L in Level is blending too much and the rule, in my opinion is unneeded here - not sure if that will solve the issue though of L Blending too much. I understand the problem though of the L and E and the awkward space left by that ligature.

Not entirely on the design side, but that many letters with vertical strokes that close to each other with gold leaf will be difficult to read (very bright). Maybe "open" the wording up, and reduce the width to height ratio if possible.
Nice work.

Well, I just got the call. The name has been changed to "Oak Level Crossing". Seems there is a subdivision with an identical name nearby. Kinda wish they had noticed that in the first place.

I'd sell them MORE signs... move the columns further apart!
I like the design Glenn! Pure class.

As far as critique... I think I'll pass on this one Glenn. In my opinion there is really no change needed. I love the first design. I liked the dropping "L's" too. Maybe have a dropping "K" too when changed to Oak"? I love both the sign shapes, but like first layout better.
Very nice work Glenn!

If I were doing it I would keep that thin horizontal line between the two lines of copy and make "Oak Level" just a tad smaller...but that is just a personal preference - not any hard and fast design principle.
You will impress your client with this presentation, I'm sure.

I think opening up the area between the pillars makes them less overbearing. I still like the panel shape. The Letter style choice is nice... I liked it the first time around, too.
I know it is hokey but an acorn and leaf graphic on the pillars instead of the diamonds might be a thought... Yeah, I know it has been done many times before... Hahahahahahaha! So? LOL!
I like RC's idea of bringing back the white gold rule line. It just adds a little something extra.
Very nice presentation. Go and sell this bad boy!

I LIKED the first one - a lot. A friend and I go to a parade of homes event around here to see builders show off their work. The look fits an expensive development- the million dollor or 500,000 to 700,000 as well. I dont think center pannel needs so much space and I wouldn't be as worried about readability from a distance as much on this type of sign as opposed to a sign that carries an advertising message. not sure about the O on the last one but this is my reaction.
