Everything's sticky on the doors except the tow chains and hooks. "Arnold's" is Signgold.
The wrecker cartoon has been painted on in the past, but with 3 trucks to do at once, I drew, scanned and vectorized the cartoon to save some time and assembled them here at the shop (while hanging out in chat).
Pinstripes, rips, rocks and flames are all paint. All three were installed and completed Saturday. Pretty good days work when you can plan ahead a little... Rapid

Ray, do you have any up-close shots of that left fender? From the last pic, that effect looks absolutely real - like it actually sits inset! Awesome.

Very nice, Ray, well done! What paint did you use for the blue flames? Did you clear over them?
(How did you manage to convince them to let you do it- I'm serious here- looking at what they had, they might be one of those 'rather hard to convince' types?)

I've been doing trucks and stuff for this company for several years. The "mailbox" lettering was done as a temporary fix while I was in Georgia. After a look at the layout, the owner thught doing gold lettering would be cool and pretty much upsold it himself. Some days things fall into place...lol.
The flames were done with One Shot paints and haven't been cleared. They will be repainting the truck red to match the rest of the fleet next spring and the flames should hold up fine til then.

Randy, I was passing by the place today and managed to get a closer shot for ya...
...and the wrecker finally stopped long enough to get a shot...
It was out on the road before I got the other two done...busy place. Rapid
PS: Check out the wreck in the backround (black truck). Some of you may remember that one from the Looney Meet. It delivered the race car to us. It's seen better days and will again soon.

What an incredible job. I just don't know how some of you guys have THAT much talent to do things like this with PAINT. That would be a digital print if I were doing it...

After ripping up a bunch of transfer tape and laying it down as a mask, I poured a little black and white OS paint onto a magazine cover and dabbed a plastic grocery bag into it, then dabbed it onto the masked area. The color mixes as you go and the texture of the bag gives it the rock look. I then used a liner brush and added the cracks. The thing to remember is that mother nature doesn't use a ruler often and not to try to get too mechanical with the cracks. A somewhat random pattern and line thickness gives it a more organic look. Airbrushing some black along the top edge while the mask is still on gives it depth. Once the mask is pulled, a line of black on the top and fire red on the bottom finishes the process.
About 30 minutes to do both sides.
I don't usually add the metal shards peeling away like a lot of the tear designs I've seen over the last few years. Doing them in paint adds drying time and additional masking/airbrushing to make them look realistic. After some practice, this is one of those effects that looks cool, relatively fast and...cha-ching...profitable.

Ray, it looks awesome to me. Tow trucks and roll-backs are fun around here too, they often go all-out on the graphics... I would love to learn to paint some of those effects, I'm gonna have my learning cap on at the Circus, hope you demonstrate some of your techniques...
One thing I might mention, this is in no way being critical of your work... but one thing that has started bugging me lately (on my own designs) is the placement of DOT numbers. Seems like they can attract attention and take away from a good-looking design. I used to just put them anywhere, but lately have been trying to find out of the way (but still DOT visible) places to put them, like on the side of the battery box, down in the corner of the door, etc. Just a random thought.
Again, GREAT JOB...

As Jon stated. The DOT #'s only has to be visable at 1.5" per State or Province. Don't cut it any smaller! and stick or paint it in a site of the "Chicken Coops" Weight Stations.
I like the effect on your RIP! Nice Work!

Just so no one gets the idea it's ok, the "DOT" #'s must be on same panel as the name they are assigned to......in other words, if name is on door, so must the DOT #'s......and height isn't as important as last line in the law, it states that they must be ledglible, I've done 1" in a heavy contrast and got away w/it, but putting DOT on panel other than one name is on, got me spanked........and argument that it's different back here doesn't wash, as it's a federal guideline, not state......
Is it just me, but phone number doesn't lay right for some reason......oh well, old eyes...
