The early sea captains brought these back to New England on return voyages, and they were put out on the gate posts are signs of welcome... and evolved from there.

You might try a little aging of tintng especially in the deeper sections to give future pieces even more depth. Do up a slightly darker shade, put it on a little watered down then then give it a wipe with an old rqag. Be brave and experiment... you can always paint it over with another coat of paint if you don't like it when you are done.

I do love this one. Dan is right.... Have you ever tried wiping on wood stain or thinned 1-Shot and then quickly wiping it back off again? The stain goes into all the nooks and crannies and really brings out the details. You have to use a soft lint-free cloth like an old baby diaper or t-shirt. Also ages things quite nicely. love....Jill

Cat, you amaze me. You can do a little of everything, & you are good at everything you set your mind to doing!!!
I just got a "snear" today from my husband when I told him I wanted to order an air eraser to do glass. He said i can't do all the stuff I want to do. I think I might just order one anyway & set about doing it!

Bobbie, Get the eraser. You'll love it. Fun and easy. Keep the pressure low til you get a feel for the "cut". I practiced on beer bottles until I was comfortable. Then on cheap mugs from Walmart. I get my aluminum oxide from the local head stone company. Much cheaper than from the art houses and sign suppliers. Doubly so because of no shipping charges.
