Well, aside from the reversed "W" this Canuk sees a depiction of "Old Glory" missing about 2 stripes ( isn't there supposed to be 13? ) and the stars seem to also be minus more than a few ( again aren't there supposed to be 50 ? )

Damn these sensitive Canadians...Good eye Ken, the flag was cropped to make it fit better, yeah, there are only 30 some stars and maybe a few stripes missing, but I heard on my visit to DC that a few states were gonna be dropped from the Union anyway...Iowa, Montana, Maine, they just aren't pulling their weight anymore....

Mike, do you ever wonder how many non-sign writers would spot something like that? Right or wrong, I know it's only the thought of other writers seeing it that bothers me. I love the boat graphics in your other post, my favourite colours and beautiful lettering.

Arthur, there's a church in Toowoomba, with every possible cut out letter that could be back to front, stuck up that way- I'll post a pic someday. (ie U, V, W, A,) It's been like that for decades & I still shudder each time I see it!

Ian, anything like this one? Back in February, I was asked for a quote to rewrite this sign exactly as it was before weathering. I made a number of suggestions on how it might be improved!!
Haven't heard back.
Okay, he may have got the 'M's and 'A's right but the X, Y and V are a bit of a surprise! Maybe he thought it would add character?
I was working in Goring-on-Thames last week and, from a very oblique angle, spotted what looked like a lovely old fashioned, hand written shop fascia on a rickety old Dickensian shop front. Thought I'd take a picture for the BB but as I drew nearer it became obvious it suffered from reversed UVWA syndrome. What a shame!

-well they got the A the right way round, but this layout is repeated on two sides of the church which fronts a corner of a main street in Toowoomba.
Edited to add that going by their expertise, they might even have the O & I back to front too, but at 55 km/h driving past, I couldn't tell whether the countersunk screwholes were on the wrong side or not! One of the kids snapped the pic a few months ago when we drove past.

Maybe it was a new venture for the chap that could't paint a straight line till he'd had a drink. Maybe a committee erected it. Maybe they tried to get all the holes aligned with the mortar rather than brick – stranger things have happened.

I'm waiting on Mike's explanation of how the W got reversed.
You guys aren't alone. This sort of thing drives me nuts. Many years ago, a signpainter in a neighboring town used to reverse all his thick and thins. His reasoning, "it doesn't matter as long as you do them all the same"
I gave him a Speedball book.

Easy to see, Mike, same as the backwards V i painted on the Veterans Banner for ya at Mazeppa! And in the parade, Sir Jordan spotted it and commented...i hung my head in shame.
12 years ago, i painted an uppercase M with only ONE thick stroke in it. Still there, 5' tall!
Computers don't make these kinds of errors, do they???

Mike, I don't mean to hijack this thread, or your cuppa, but I've just noticed that the S is upside down on that church sign, too...
And Arthur, I learned pretty quickly a while ago that it's usually easier to drill a hole in the brick itself, than in the mortar...unless you have lots of time!

Ian, then I guess you've never met a Wainwright's Wirecut brick. One masonary bit per hole! They are a nightmare but at least they taught me never to quote for installations. I'm told Staffordshire Blues are even worse but I've never had to drill one.
Good song title though: "I got dem ol' Staffordshire Blues". "Woke up dis mornin and couldn't get through dem hard as diamond Staffordshire Blues".

Arthur- They sound worse than Midhurst Blue bricks ( what the hell do they put in those)!-2 masonary drills per hole-and cut the plugs in half...I never drill the fixing holes in the signs until AFTER i arrive on site with those jobs.
Hey Mike- I'm sure we can do a little better than Tea and Crumpets- This is BONNIE scotland ya know-

Arthur- You been eating cheese before bed again?
Midhurst Elves might not be too far from the truth thou- I watched these bricks being made as a kid at primary school- BY HAND!! ( some 20 odd years ago )- and I was facinated- all the tools and the speed these guys worked at ( they were all on piece time) Then the BIG firey kilns- it was like another world..all now sadly gone ( like most of Britains manufacturing industries- But hey- we can still turn out a sign or two eh?)

Staffordshire Blues: The best I could do today I'm afraid. A magnificent Great Western Railway skew-bridge. The radiused specials and corbelled strings are pure Staffs but the facings are a mixture. It's more likely that it was done for visual rather than financial relief, as the GWR were a proud and rich company.
