Sweet job Ray. Wonder about centering 'Grapevine' and making that larger and somehow tucking 'The' in the middle - but I guess that wouldnt work with the oval on top...
Very cool - i love the scrollwork.
Hope you hit em hard for it - worth every penny and then some--

I really dig the ribbon, talking about the ribbon, inverting the ribbon to make it follow the oval could be nice. I'm with dan on skipping the oval and enlarging the grapes. Nice color for the background ! I'm not surprised this proposition sold,it is very nice !!!

And, no Dan, this will not be the first job on my new ShopBot - it will not be in for another month and this has to go up the first week in June...just not enough time.
The customer wanted grapes somewhere, so I plugged them in the oval, although they probably will look a little different (customer was told this was just for placement).
Daniel - I don't think you and Antonelli are talking about the same thing.
Since this is "Proposal A"...you might want to see the rejected proposal. "B" uses a layout that Dan was suggesting...I think. The grapes in B would have actually been vines running through the word "The" with some grapes scattered through out. Just poked in the same clipart for reference.
Bob - the post is 6" square tubing. Would probably look better fattened up some. I'll do that on the next one. Already enough work in this one.
The bad thing about these designs is that you eventually have to build them. That's when you want to hang the designer. Now Mike has to figure out a way to put all these pieces together...with my help of course.

Raymond, if you were to go with the top one, I'd prefer the text from the bottom one, as Dan does, and put the grapes where the brassy triangle is, beneath the ribbon. (I'm not totally convinced I like the arch of the ribbon- it's such a contrast with the flow of the rest of the sign, but I don't have a better solution to offer, either!)

Aside from the good design work your photoshop skill are showing all over the place.
I'm going to tell everyone I know you.

Beautiful designs Raymond. Joe has told me you do some beautiful creations and now I see why. I'm not qualified to critique either but do prefer the Oval. Something about curves that make me smile. Good luck with that shop bot. I hope you like it as much as I like mine but expect some ramp up time. Never posted here before but expect to be more tuned in to see what the REAL artists do. I'm inspired.

I really like the oval too. I like Stewarts idea about putting the grapes under the ribbon and using the plan B lettering in the top design. I like the ribbon too because it mirrors the top arch of the oval. Speaking of mirroring....I might try reducing the arch of the ribbon ....more in line with the arch at the top of the oval.
This is gonna be a sweet piece! Are the letters going to be raised prismatics?????

Thanks for the great comments, guys. I think you may be on to something, here.
The customer has already chosen Proposal A, but I am meeting with her tomorrow afternoon to get the deposit and spot the site for the installation and I'll see if she likes this latest revision any better.
Mark Yearwood (better know around here as "Mr. Picky") emailed me and said he didn't like the diamond shapes, so I changed up the design a little. Hey, he's won all those awards so he must know what he's talking about.
Any comments on the revision?

I think that grey woman must think it's a bus stop, or she can't read. You'd have thought she'd have gone home by now- she was there yesterday when I looked, too! (On second thoughts, her knees are slightly inclined- she must be busting to go- you'd better give her some time off, Raymond )
Oh, the sign: nice, Raymond. I'd be more inclined to loose the oval around the grapes, and put them on their own, bigger, in the same place now. They could even overhang the bottom a bit.

Ian - I took your advice...and also Mr. Picky sent me a Photoshop image of some grapes/leaves that he had produced for another job (and didn't use) and they worked great.
It's hard to stay away from tickling these things.
I'm off in just an hour to get the deposit and the final approval for the design.

Between Raymond Mr Picky and others I think they pretty much have the design on the sign part nailed... but me and Phoebe agree with Bob on the post.
Only we'd fatten up just the bottom portion to give it a little weight. A little time with a router (MC router) would give it some fancy like the top.

I assume this is going to be a dimensional sign, and since I haven't done much dimensional signage, I have a technical question: Why does the sign face(oval)have to be HDU? Could the lettering and scroll not be applied over some less expensive sign face? I'm just trying to learn why you would plan a sign that way. Thanks.
posted
Thanks Lotti - HDU was chosen because the background of the main oval will be sandblasted. It could have been made of other materials if not sandblasted but HDU is lightweight, easy to carve and manipulate. The edge of the oval will have a routed cove with gold leaf and that would have been difficult to do in any other medium.
Dan - I'm proud of you. Not a wiggly line in sight. May just be something that I will have to add. Just a little tickle here and there.
Mr. Picky has already said he was expecting his usual fee.
Whatever added expense HDU may add to the total price of the sign is not that great a deal with me. If something works and will last, then that's what I will use. The selling price is not all that dependent on material cost anyway.
This sign is in a town of 5,000 folks and will be my yellow page ad for the other businesses there.
These don't come along every day, so I want it to look especially nice.

You have no idea how hard it was for me to do the changes with straight lines.... I just didn't want to muck up your nice drawing.
But just imagine how NICE ot would look with some funky stonework as a base... all freehand of course...
I look forward to seeing the finished piece Raymond!

Muck- as in 'Muckin' of Geordie's Byre' an old song I knew as a kid, means to throw out the manure from the stable.
Muck up- is a phrase we use down under, which means 'to modify', to put it politely. When I studied engineering, we referred to it as 'altering the structural coefficients' !
In Canadian, it could loosely mean 'to add some wobbles' (ok, I'm going back to muck out the stable now...)

Thank you Raymond. I guess I'm always trying to save customers money when I should be trying to make myself more of it I can't wait to see your sign finished.
