Here are a couple variations on a tee design that I worked up late last night. I want a western feel, but I feel I may have gone overboard, let me know what you think maybe give me a new direction or a few hints. I have been staring at them too long.

You've put a lot of effort into them, & they both look appealing to me! Are you going to hand print them yourself, or get them done so you can use a heat press & iron them on? Are they meant to be all tones of the same colour?

I actually prefer the bottom layout, altho both are excellent. It all just "fits" together better, and I love the clever use of the ball as the "o" in shootout. It maintains the Western feel without being too heavy. Also, next year, all you have to do is change that date in the background! I think the only thing I might try (which may ruin things) is to make the center vertical bar of the middle T in shootout just a bit longer, almost connecting it to the ribbon underneath. Those are really nice! I'm not real hot on the giant 2006 on the bottom one though. The top layout rocks too but for some reason the shape of the panel screams baseball to me (I think it might be reminding me of a Yankees logo)
either way ... nice work

This is some nice work. I like the bottom one in the way you've nested copy. Also the use of negative space is better than the top.

I love the top one! Like Mark, I'm not too keen on the 2006 on the bottom one, other than that I really like it too. Great stuff - keep staying up late.....

Very, very nice work on both of them. I actually like the bottom one if it was done on the shirts so the back part would be very faint. maybe as a halftone. Very good design work Doug.

Nice work Doug!! I like both but I do prefer the top one. It's just a tad top heavy. How about having the top back panel on the bottom too? Is that the Fred Meyer "logo" looks a little out of place with that plain letterstyle, but if it is there's not much you can do about it.
Looking good!

I like them both but I prefer the top one. Freddies will be very proud!! I'll have to come by next time I'm in Los Anchorage.

I really like them both, but probably favour the bottom one.
I think the thing that bothers me the most on both of them is the FredMeyer panel. Looks disjointed and out of place. Abit like an afterthought plopped in later. I agree with Stevo about the letterstyle on it looking out of place too. I'd consider losing it, or get in the flow of design abit better with perhaps by minimizing it's emphasis abit more.
Another minor tweak on the bottom one. Try placing the light more on the mid-upper radius of the basketball, and then encasing the entire ball in an ultra thin white outline. That will give the ball a more uniform treatment as the letters around it, and may make it pop out just a TAD bit more. Make it slight, as you really don't want the ball to be a centerpoint either.
Splendid job on both designs! BRAVO!

If you give it the squint test, the bottom one appears to be missing something in the upper right corner. If you wrote the Alaska Prep on one line and tucked the 2006 in where the word Prep is right now I think it would balance it. Another thought would be to tweak the right top of the T to fill in the area somehow. It just seems like the T is crowding the ball and there is nothing above it to justify that. Everything seems to draw my eye to the area just above the ball and it kind of falls off the logo into mid air. I hope that makes some sense....just my take on it.

Both are very nice designs, with the top one probably my preference. Being not much into sports though, it took me a split second or so to figure out that it didn't say Shoo Tout but Shootout. Just an observation

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
I agree the top design is a bit top heavy and feels a little "basebally" (I get credit for that word:)). I will be trying slight variations on the back panel to get more of a court feel.
No, I can't do anything about the Fred Meyer font it's their logo. I'm still finding it hard to incorporate it better. Any suggestions?
I understand the squint test balance comment, but I like to try asymmetry sometimes. Using a computer to design tends to get too mathmatical and mechanical -- I struggle with this a lot.
I have been making a new logo for the tournament for 12 years now, trying to keep it "fresh" so the kids have a different shirt, each year this is becoming harder.
In addition to printing the tees, I do all the prepress work on the program book -- that is always a nightmare deadline-wise.
Personally I'm leaning towards the bottom one but ulimatley the committee will choose, so I will be tweaking until I like them both.

I like both, but prefer the top one. So far as tweaking, perhaps make the back panel assymetrical. Place the basketball graphic to one side and the "2006 Alaska Shootout" on the other (stacked). Put the "Sponsored by Fred Meyer" all on the ribbon. If you did that, you'ld probably want the ribbon to be 50% larger.
Another afterthought. The back panel comes close to the shape of the three point line on a basketball court. Maybe using a shape that's recognizable as part of a basketball court would be cool?
