Sometimes more than just a great design is required when asked to make a new sign for an old business
The letters are hand-cut dimensional foam with "hollywood" lights added to make it show bright at night, and are stud mounted to get rid of the raceways. The descriptor sign is MDO with painted/vinyl combo.
I would love it if this could be done more often to help improve some of the commercial premises around here, but most budgets don't seem to allow for it.
Oh well, hope you like it, the client was ecstatic!

wow Tim!! 1000% improvement! It really has a 'New England coast' feel to it. I would be interested in knowing how much the business income and clientel has changed/ improved since this huge transformation!

I can totally identify Tim. Some of our so-called historic district businesses are severely lacking as well. I think these folks who 'poor-mouth' have it excatly backwards. The reality is, they can't afford NOT to do something major.

Very good work Tim. You gave the business a whole new feel and look. No wonder they were pleased.

Thanks for the replies folks! I am very sorry I haven't responded quickly, but I had to take a couple days off to have a baby heart-attack! or so I think....diagnosis is coming....more on that later.....
This job came by way of my very good friend and associate who runs a print shop here. Often we will work together with clients that want the "full meal deal". He took care of all the print needs and I took care of the sign stuff. We worked together with the client to provide a package with continuity regarding colors and design.
I started with the picture of the original building, and presented my part with alittle photoshop magic so the client could get a real vision of what it could be. The client then had the building painted, my buddy produced the printed matter, and I applied the signage and recommended another friend (electrician) to install the lighting how I wanted it.
I have done another since this, and I am currently working on another building just down the road from the swallows nest. I showed them this one to help guide them to thinking of the bigger possibilities. It will now also involve a repaint with dimensional signage.
I would tend to believe this original one will make me just as much money or more from it, as it has the client with the fresh new look. It has become a very successful business. Its nice to be able to show the new prospective clients the before and after. Really helps to seal the deal.
As to the foam, if you're not going to use HDU, don't ever use the blue stuff. It will eventually disintegrate. My sign mentor used blue and its just aweful stuff to work with. It crumbles and doesnt last long.
I have always used the pink, and have stuff thats 12 years old and still looks like the day it was installed. Some of the oldest ones I've done might need a repaint in a few more years (maybe, but they still all look great), but I can't ever see using HDU given all the work involved with it, the special glues, fillers, primers, very high cost, etc.
The pink is readily available, cuts like butter on my homemade hotwire, finishes very easily with little work, and paints up beautifully with ben-moore's best latex. The letters pictured above are 2-1/2" thick.
