I've had some questions about how the Balmoral sign was produced, so I thought I'd post a few more pics here. The original design was by Stevo, so kudos to you Stevo!!
I met with the client and we made a few small changes and agreed on colors. Funny thing was, we never discussed doing in an antique style, but when I started painting the background, it just felt like the right thing to do. I called her and convinced her to let me do it in this style and she agreed.
This first pic shows a bit of the painting process. The background is latex paint, painted in very quickly with crazy x's all over, adding bits of white as I got closer to the centre. Then I took the 3" foam brush I was using and loaded some watered-down blackish latex on one side of the brush. I lightly went around the outside edge of the green as you can see. I also added black to the maroon outline and rubbed it with a cloth in places. The great thing about this look is you can't really do anything wrong! And its fun! I did blend into that white in the middle a bit more than shown. I cut a mask and airbrushed some detail in the white lettering. I also used a mask on the scrolls for the size for the goldleaf. I removed the mask while the size was still wet so the edges wouldn't be too thick. I guilded the outside outline by hand, and had trouble with it. I added too much paint to the size to tint it, and it didn't dry well. Then the guild stuck to the latex background and it was terrible to try to remove. I fought with it for hours, and then ended up just scrubbing the whole thing off. I kinda liked that "accidental antique" effect on that outline, so I left it.
The last step was to outline all the lettering and the scrolls. I did do that by hand, and was fairly happy with the results, since I really don't trust my handpainting skills. (or lack thereof!!)
Thanks again everyone! You absolutely made my day!!!

Linnie, This sign is simply outstanding. You added your own touches to make it superb. Thanks for explaining how you got a 100% flat sign to look 3D! I love your colors too. And I've seen you handpaint in person, and your skills are impressive. You go, girl. Love....Jill PS Kudos to Stevo and to Arthur for Tideway.

Glad you provided a close up photo too. The colours of the sign are so warm and rich. I love the paint effects you implemented. Beautiful indeed.
Thumbs up on the execution Suelynn! Kudos also to Stevo for the design.

My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

That's beautiful, Suelynn! Thanks for sharing.
You make me believe that someday I'll be able to handle something like that!
