Our job, as I see it, is to take a customer's request, and find the right solution for their business.
Pappy's case is a good example of this.
Pappy's Liquor is a liquor store which is out by the beach. My assignment was to create a "Pappy" for them. I asked them what their interpretation of a Pappy was.
They proceeded to describe a hillbilly type character, on a rocker, smoking a corn pipe and taking a swig from a jug marked XX. Then they added, that they wanted something "hip" upbeat and catchy. He said their clients were a lot of fisherman, surfer dudes, local beachcombers and tourists. They wanted to be able to sell coolies, hats, shirts and other stuff with "Pappy" on it.
hmmmmm ... okay I replied. I'll come up with something.
Thoughts of a laid back beachy character with a fishing pole and a beer were what came up first in my head. Then I put a spin on "Pappy" (taking abit of a risk) and took it upon myself that he shouldn't be a person at all, but rather a pelican.
I'm no cartoonist, (obviously) but I drew this "hip" laid back dude-bird up from my head ... so be kind!
This was a logo I did over a month ago. It was well recieved. (whew). So now we are proceeding with a lit sign for it. This is the logo art adapted for the sign.

haha. Thats cool Nettie. Great job on the cartoon. For me, animals are harder to cartoon than humans. You did a great job.

When you think liquor, think Pappy: the rough shaven, beer bellyed drunk fishing Pelican.
I like it.

It's brilliant! A human hillbilly character would have been so much harder to try to make "hip, upbeat and catchy", but the bird nails it grandly. And your illustration style is perfect for it. I'd sure wear one of those T-shirts!

Great... a pelican with a fishin' pole, a bottle of booze wearin' a pink "beater".. you forgot to draw his tooth..err... toof.
Perfect!
We have a bar/lounge right on one of the beaches here called "The Naked Turtle".. We don't have any turtles in this area but there sure is a lot of nekkid, especially now with Spring Break.
