Here's a great looking sign done by Mark Fair's Flying Biscuit Antique Sign Company.
The whole sign is constructed with 1/4" "Luan" Plywood mounted on a back frame. The finish is all acrylic. House paint and tube acrylics. That great looking dog pictorial is a hand tinted Edge print. Nice job!

Great work on that sign. Thanks for all the close ups of the work. It sure helps us see all the detail that is there. Work like that inspires us to strive to improve our skills. Harry

I'm not exactly sure what process Mark used here to create his crackle effect, but I'll find out. In the meantime, there is a step by step at http://www.letterhead.com/steps/sc-step/index.html that explains one way to achieve this effect.

Mark just sent in an update via carrier pigeon.
Mark uses pretty much the same techniques as David Kynaston's Step by Step. The only real difference in Mark's method is his use of acrylic and water based paints to speed up the drying process.
Here is the material list for this project.
acrylic house paint acrylic tube color Behr crackle medium water based polyurethane sponges sandpaper Mack brushes
One last note. The frame on this sign is not real wood. It's created using Shep's wood graining techniques. Had me fooled and I've had Shep's course.

Thanks Steve for posting that article - I ordered SignCraft mag because of it. I would love to learn more about painting - I don't do much of it now.
