Several years ago (about 25 I guess) I tried doing this with only mediocre results on some motorcycle tanks. Recently, Mike Lavallee, posted some of his marvalous realistic flame jobs, which re-inspired me to try it again. I'm not there yet, but I'm having fun with an airbrush. As you see, I have gotten into some very different effects by stumbling around. They are just practice panels, and I'm not ready to try anything serious yet. The first is a cutable vector, a few alien and tribal airbrushed, etc. All of these airbrushed ones are shot without masks. Years ago, when I first started airbrushing, I used penknife cut paper, and then stuck to the tanks for masking certain designs. I would then dry back the area to be painted. Paint and let dry. The paint would repell slightly from the wet paper which gave a perfectly tapered edge to the graphic. I could peel the paper later this way. A lucky find I guess.

I agree. They all show a process at work, but I think that last panel is ready for the market.

Thanks for sharing your learning curve. You might well have inspired me.
