Yes Joe mark is correct, although I might add if you are comfortable with oil base you can obtain flattening paste from Chromatic to "knock" down the gloss and still use oil base paints.
Thats what we do.

I have to agree with you on the “plastic” appearance. I will use your suggestions on my next couple of sand blasted signs. I have had good results with stain. I guess I just don’t have a “system” down yet…
Thanks again, Joe

Would someone clarify this latex paint business for me please?
I haven't bought house paint for many years so I'm wondering if it is new paint technology or a change of terminolgy. Might it be what we call emulsion over here – as used for painting interior walls?

Latex, or Acrylic Latex is a waterbased product used for coating homes, interior walls, enamels on cabinets as well as many other things. Today without a doubt the most widely used paint product. In enamel forms it can exemplify oil enamel appearances.

OK, I'll be the odd ball here. I agree about the plastic look of high gloss (I don't like it either) but I use it. I use it cause it sheds the weather better and it doesn't take long for the surface to loose its shine anyway ....now I'll go away.
