This is a sign I did recently, actually there were 3 of them. The before was badly flat routed redwood. The after is 1 1/2" hdu with copy hand carved and the flourish 1" hdu cut out and beveled. Before After Closeup

I'm glad you posted this. Karyn Bush and I were talking about this type of sign the other day. Did you get the shape by copying the sign that was there originally?
If there was just a blank space there and no pre existing sign, how would you get the angles and everything right?
Very nice "After" by the way?

Amy, I'm not sure how he did it, but on an existing cavity with no pattern sign, I would use some heavy paper and with help push it up into the corners and make reference marks or stabs. I would then lay out the rough pattern and smooth it up, only slightly smaller so that it didn't bind. I would then cut cardboard and make a test blank. On a planned cavity type hang, make a pattern and template for the bricklayers to use slightly larger than your planned sign. Letting bricklayers lay around a sign is usually a big mistake.

I did the sign for another sign company. They supplied the file. I drew a paper pattern full size and went to the walls to see how it would fit. I marked differences on the pattern. I took photos of a sort of step by step for hand routing the letters, but I don't think they would show up well on the net. I used to be one of the few around here doing routed signs by hand, now everybody seems to have a cad router.

Great looking sign. A big improvement. If you did that with a hand router, please post any info you can. We should be able to pick up most if not all that you are trying to convey to us in a step by step. If not we can always ask. ;0 Thanks in advance for anything you do.

The black background is sprayed automotive which leaves a slick surface in the letters. I add a little One Shot silver to the gold to lighten it. Notice the carved looks brighter laying flat and the raised flourish looks brighter on the wall. This is due to the light being reflected more by the brighter part.
