We just finished this one for the front of our shop i blasted it and my wife painted it. Hunting is big here so I hope this brings in a lot of business.

It is sandstone my father in law owns a stone quarry so we get the raw material free although it is quit a bit of work splitting and shapping it. we use one shot paint and krylon spray paint.

I read somwhere that the ancient Egyptians drilled holes in the rock, drove in wedges, and soaked them with water to split the rock. They also built fires to superheat the rock and then poured water on it. How do you do it?
All we have here is limestone.

I don't do it much different than the ancient Egyptians did I drill holes about 6 inches apart where we want the stone to break then drive wedges in the holes until it cracks I guess my only advantage is i have a drill that runs off of an air compressor. My father in law has had a giant stone saw and splitter for two years now but hasn't gotten them set up yet when he does things will get much easier.

Looks great. I am from Mt Airy NC and they have the worlds largest open face Granite Quarry....I have Sandblasted some of the rock ..but I have not undertaken what you are doing (Splitting ) etc..sounds like a lot of work. I have watched some of the "Old Timers" carve the stone....fascinating to watch..but takes a tremendous amount of skill and patience. Shep'
