I have a job to design for an Old English Pub style sign (sort of). This will be my first handpainted job. That I am not worrying about. The design I am!!

I haven't been able to come up with any ideas so I picked up a pencil today. I haven't drawn anything more than a stick figure since high school (13 years ago!)

So here is my start... I plan to put this in the lower left corner of the sign. After I drew it I scanned it and decided to try out my Wacom tablet that I have had forever and never use to add some color.

Be nice, I never claimed I could draw very well!

Amy,

I applaud you for always moving forward and trying new things. You drawing is great! if you add some percpective to that pocket and some depth to the pocket, you'll be right on the money. I would also remove the shadow on the top rail, or bring it closer to the stick, remember the stick is resting on that. the shadow would not be the same as on the table.

just remember we all have a million mistakes in us and the more you draw the faster you'll get them all out.

way to go girl!

Thanks Bob! I just noticed that I also have the light direction wrong on the ball for the shadowing to be correct. Live and learn.

Hey Amy, Shame on you for not drawing in 13 years (just kiddin'). You've been missing out on all kinds of fun. If I get bored, I seem to start drawing. If I get mad at somebody, I'll draw a charicature (probably spelled wrong) of them. I myself am better at drawing cars, cartoons, buildings....anything but realistic, potrait type drawings of people. I am really bad about exaggerating detail and all my drawn people seem to have warped noses, ugly lips and the like. Have a good one, and keep on drawing. [Cool]

Hey,just another note.Bob Rochon comments were right on bout the shadows and such. Ive not been on here long, but im finding whose comments have VALIDITY and whose are nuthing but slames to fuel their ego. Mr. Rochon seems to be one who generates a POSITIVE side to all his responses. Might take note of that. Also since you got your idea, head on out and get to paintin! you can figure all that needs to be on the canvase.More time you sit coloring on a computer, isnt going to buy groceries come friday! Most ALL projects change after you leave the drawing board. When i do a stripe job besides colors and basic "shape" of design, its absolutly usless to draw much till iget the stabilo in my hand on that project in that minute. you could really add some depth on this with the airbrush the shading on the stick and ball would look sweet. also a not so bad Idea would be to exagerate the definitiion with black outlines, would help definr what it is from a distance.

I agree with what was said by the others Amy. Also, You have some real drawing skills there. Keep that pencil handy and sketch whenever you can. By the stuff you have produced on your site, it is apparent that you are a very talented designer, so why not add "artist" to your name also? The bookstores have great little books on form and shape, and also line drawing and color.
Most of my stuff starts out with a basic shape like a square, circle, pear shape, cone etc. All things are made up of basic shapes. I learned this early on, and I am glad I did. It really simplified things for me.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

John, I loved to draw when I was a kid but became a rebelious teenager and screwed up some stuff. Hopefully when Amber gets a little older I will have time to do some things I enjoy and want to learn like airbrushing!

Stephen, Thanks for the links. I have looked at more pub signs this week than you can imagine. I even have the British edition of the Letterheads magazine which has some. My idea of the Old English Pub Sign doesn't fit with what they want on it. Hopefully I'll find out today!

When I was in college, I drew EVERY day, lots and lots and lots drawing. I had a sketch book with me everywhere I went.

I unfortunatly don't draw as much these days, and your post convicted me of that.

I used to have a cartoon in my office of a guy at a computer and just above him on the wall was one of those glass boxes with a sign that said "in case if power outage, break glass" inside was a pencil and paper. [Wink]

BTW- you made a very bad mistake in your post, you told everyone that you had been out of high school for 13 years! Now someone with nothing to do could sit down, maybe take their shoes off, and count how old you are! Isn't there some unwritten rule that women should NEVER reveal their age? [Big Grin]

Michael,FWIW, I think it isn't the notion that women, or "ladies" (is that word politically correct these days?) never reveal their age------ it is, or was, that a gentleman would never ask.

You're only as old as you feel. I don't care what my age is. I'm 31 by the way. Everyone always thinks I'm younger so that's all that matters, right! HA HA HA! [Big Grin]
