I was biking past a vacant storefront when I noticed that a new sign franchise was about to open shop. This particular shop is in a small strip mall of about 50 stores, mostly restaurant, ice cream, coffee chains etc. that rely heavily on neon signs. No trucks, a-frames, or any other outdoor signs are allowed.
In the last 6 months, I got 3 phone calls for window lettering from this center for A grand total of $275
This came as a surprise to me because the franchise had already opened a sign shop just 5 miles up the road 3 years ago in an area that has 3,000 plus stores in a 3 mile strip. This area also has 6 large established sign companies to service them.
That sign franchise opened and closed in 6 months.
Now this poor sap has spent his $100,000 nest egg on a shop that needs to crack 20 grand a month just to break even in yet an even smaller market.
Oh well, at least the franchise can laugh all the way to the bank.

We finally got one of those franschise shops in town, buy the look of their stuff so far, they aren't too good, design wise. They are in a strip mall and have the biggest ad in the phone book. I'm taking bets on how long they will last. Cheers
