OK! Now you're a Sign person. What area of the sign trade have you ALWAYS wanted to master, but just never have for whatever reasons? For me, I always wanted to learn CARVING....just never got around to it! How about YOU!

Sandblasting and glue chipping. Got the room, most of the equipment, just need to find the time.

Making a living at it. I've taken on a lot of awful jobs to survive the dry spells. Glue chipping would be interesting.
Pinstriping! I've got all the time in the world right now, but I'll be darned if I can get the hang of it. Straight line stripers hold me in awe. Maybe I should try to start a new trend = wiggly striping, and tell the customers "Aw, ANYBODY can do straight lines". They go for vinyl - they'd go for that.

A replica of the frieze from the Parthenon, the Aztec calendar stone, Tutankhamun's death mask, or maybe just some Egyptian bas relief. Not enough room in the showroom so I haven't decided yet.
I want to get more into carving and gilding.

Hey MIKE..... Straight line pinstriping.... After you've got down the paint consistency, make sure you "palette" both sides of you Double 00 swordstriper, hold it at the round part of the handle just above the "heel" with your thumb and forefinger, and "pull" your line from the shoulder, NOT your arm. You'll be doing straight lines in a week if you practice just 10 minutes a day!

Personally I feel I can learn and make anything pretty quickly, anything that is except sales and marketing. I really suck at that! Guess I'd say that the part of the sign biz I need to learn.

Glue Chipping, Pumpin' Gas (neon not unleaded), F.R.P. for dimensional work (I know how, just want to do it better) Wanna be better at 4 color process screenprinting, straight line striping would be nice too, and for programs, Autocad, I own it, and I have not learned it and I'm kicking myself for spending the money, and Form Z, another outrageous purchase gone awry, but I think I'm gonna get rid of that. I don't stripe either, and just haven't put the time into practising. I'd love to master - as opposed to just occasionally mess with - the various techniques of glass work; glue-chipping, angel-gilding, all the trick treatments.

Interesting post...hope gettin us to think about it will get a few of us having to come up with a new one next time somebody asked the same question.
Gluechipping is high on my list. But, the one thing on the very top is pinstriping. I have a couple striping brushes, have the paint and the reducers. There's just no excuse I can think of not to practice.
Pinstriping is not only probably the least expensive thing to get into in the sign world, equipment seems to use up the least space, too. It's quick money if you're good at it...but, the number one reason that I would love to be a decent pinstriper is...
...have you ever watched a striper work and watched their face? It's like they're in some kinda beautiful zen world for a few minutes...and that's someplace I'd like to visit.

Don.....yeah.....pinstripers "go away" when they stripe......the "ALPHA STATE" or something close to that. When they "come back" the job is done!
