I must agree with some of you regarding my 2nd posting in regards to zero responses for a "Thumbs Up" design!
When I 1st registered with this site in 1999, I tried to introduce myself and only 2 members responded. "Hard to get onto the dance floor when no body is there!"
Since then I must admit that I come here on occasion to read post and responses to gather knowledge. On occasion, I have responded when I know that I have something of worth.
I work full time for the State of Delaware as a Fuel Tax Auditor. Now there is something you can give me %$#@ about.
I have been glass etching for over 25 years now, starting on the custom van/truck movement of the 70's & 80's. I am colorblind, so I don't do a lot of sign work and glass etching is only positive or negative designs. Due to the state job, I do my designs in the evenings/weekends. I went computerized about 6 years ago, but still hand cut my wildlife designs for gun cabinets. Can't get the details needed from my Roland plotter.
Looking back to that day and how I barked at this site for zero responses, I must apologize!
However, that response was due to me suffering from Diabetes and an extremely high blood sugar day. Those that suffer with Diabetes will understand.
It happens to all too many of us. We just allow our fast paced lives to control our actions!
I have taken the time to read each and every response to my request and have attached some answers to those that I think need some response.
To those that don't want to read further, sorry for my remarks, but I guess I have finally gotten onto the dance floor. I only hope you will give me a chance to shake a leg once and awhile.
Thanks, atog254
Response to my Request for “Thumbs Up” design:
Old Paint: I have clip art up the Kazoo! Corel 3/5/8, Clip Art 65,000 Art Explosion, Roland Vector Art Vol. 4, and use the following websites: ArtToday.com, Clip Art.com, LaLogotheque.com, Logo types.com, and Rolandga.com but sometimes you just can't put your finger on what you're looking for. Brain Farts! Some of my clip art is well documented others are CD's and I have yet to figure a quick way of searching or getting a fingernail of the images without having to open and then finding it's not what I'm looking for.
With so many on this BB, I was only hoping someone would have a design on hand (No pun intended).
I was able to locate in Art Explosion aprox. 30 Thumbs Up designs at 3:00 AM and cut the images for etching in the following morning.
Pat Foley, Corey Wine, Doug Allan:
Like you indicated, just because I don't post doesn't mean I'm not in the background reading.
Sometimes I don't post because I don't feel I know enough to compete with all you pros. But when I responded to my area of knowledge (Glass Etching) and on one occasion (Delaware Fuel Tax laws) I felt great that I was finally able to give something back for all the knowledge that I have gained here.
Sonny Franks:
Busy! I work full time for the State of Delaware and have to travel out of state for some audits. Kills my glass etching business, having to catch up after a week or two on the road. I do a lot of volunteer work (Head Chaperone for local high school marching bank with 220 member, Hospice, Make a Wish, Delaware Heart Assoc.)When not glass etching, I do woodworking and remodel homes for resale. I do all this because I am trying to but two children thru college at the same time and one of those is paying out of state fees at Univ. of MD.
The beer mugs were for customers and not friends! Friends get put aside until I have free time... The order came in on my answering machine on Thurs. and needed to be completed by Sunday. Trying to put two children thru college, I don't like to turn away a quick buck.
I came home on Friday due to my diabetes shooting high and saw that there were no postings. I regret being short in my 2nd posting. I try to control my temper even with high sugar levels.
As previously mentioned, I finally got onto the dance floor, but I hope you and others will give me a chance to shake-a-leg once in awhile.
John Thompson:
I come here when I have some free time and caught up on yard work and repairs to home or shop. I also have built all of the blasting cabinets, jigs for my shop.
If you know of a good way to organize clip art in the various CD's or websites (see above) that I use, then I can find what I want faster. I just was in a JAM at the time and hoped someone had something on hand. (No pun intended). Since there was no post and the work needed to be done by Sunday, I stayed up until 3:00 AM until I found what I needed in Art Explosion. And, my scanner program was not working at the time.
PKing:
"Leave it to a Yankee from Deleware to get offened by the citizens of Letterville." It's Delaware, also known as the First State, a border state during the Civil War and my ancestry fought on the side of the South!
BECAUSE... of an insecured need to impress the beer drinking friends. (Paying customers!)
The lack of ability to draw. (Scanner not working at that time so I could not scan in artwork and vectorize design - I have since purchased new scanner!)
The un-willingness to buy. (See above)
Along with the nerve to represent ones self as being a professional sign maker. (Just a bad day, did you ever have one of those?)
Bruce Bowers:
I can't imagine why he wasn't able to find one in a clip art collection. Oh, that's right... he wanted a freebie. (I stayed up until 3:00 AM Friday night until I found what I needed in Art Explosion.) Do you know of a better way to locate an obscure design when you don't know the right path to follow?
It isn't the clip art request that offended me, although I still think it is wrong to ask. It is the manner that he responded when people failed to jump through hoops to his request. (Looking back to that day and how I barked at this site for zero responses, I must apologize! However, that response was due to me suffering from Diabetes and an extremely high blood sugar day. Those that suffer with Diabetes would understand.)
Steve Spiry, Jeffery Vrstal, Stan McKinnon, Doug Wright, Dave Grundy & Steve Shortbread:
Thanks, you are the kind of members I hoped to meet on this BB.
Sorry for my remarks - It was just a bad day and no time to get everything done!
I have always felt that if some one does you a favor that you owe two in response, BUT not to that person! Would make for a much better world!
Steve Shortbread:
You were one of the only two persons that responded to my introduction! I thank you!
Unlike most of the residents here, I only do glass etching since I am colorblind!
I am quite good at Glass Etching (25 years experience). I have had designs printed in two national magazines, seen on TNN regarding a Trucking event, and in local newspapers.
I have put designs & logos on glassware/ceramics, gun cabinets, bar mirrors, automotive/commercial/ residential windows and mirrors; churches, banks, restaurants, country clubs. I regularly do fund raisers for local schools, colleges or events.
Motto: "Imagination is the only Limitation!"
Loved doing the Van & Trucking events of the 70's and 80's Very few were doing glass etching in those days and as you indicated it wasn't unusual for a crowd to gather around a Touch of Glass at work, and I loved their attention and all the dumb questions.... and it did give me a feeling of satisfaction and self worth.
Steve, I'll be back, and if I can provide some information or assistance from my limited area of glass etching, I will be there!
Thanks for putting on the dance,
Steve Carter {:{)

Here's a thumbs up to your post, Steve. I wish this could have been posted earlier and saved you from all of our ribbing! I totally understand Diabetes... and after the results of blood work this week I so far am free of it. I watched it kill my Father-in-law (1st father-in-law, cancer got the second one).
I hope you ARE able to jump in here more often, I'm sure that even how ever insignificant you might think your info is, there's someone out there that will greatly benefit from it - profit and pass that info along to someone else. The craft lives on.
Thanks.

Welcome home to one of the best communities on this planet. I'm sorry you had such a tough day that day, and I'm really happy that you're giving us another chance. Every family/community has it's over-zealous memebers (tattletales, I told you so, wannabe sheriff, mom always liked you best whiners, etc. ). Too often, we forget what we're actually here for which is to listen (HEAR), think (OPEN MIND), help (CONSTRUCTIVE), and give that occassional hug or pat on the back or helping hand up when necessary. I admit that I'm much more of a 'reader' than a 'responder', but that doesn't mean I'm any less a member of the community (lol, if ya hang out in chat, you know I have opinions ). Thanks for stepping forward and re-extending your hand.

Thanks for coming back ATOG. We all have those rushes. I ain't being mean but all I did was look up "thumbs up" in the index of Art Explosion and found the 29 or so images you are talking about. If I am in a pinch fo time ala. "a quickie sticky", I will just head for Art Explosion unless I know exactly where an image is at in another set.

While you're here....will you please audit my fuel tax? They're getting me for so much that a refund would be appreciated. Seems the tax should be eliminated whenever we're shuttling a van load of other folks kids to and from games in vehicles without any etching on the windows. Thanks for expressing yourself here, and please, eat before you audit.

Hi Steve. Welcome to Letterville. Glad to see we didn't scare you away. This is a fun place, but sometimes it does get kind of crazy. I guess you learn real quick (like Karen said) who the tattletales and wannabe sign policewomen are and pretty much ignore them. Hope to see more of you in Letterville!

Steve, In retrospect, some of us may have been having "one of those days" in our responses to your second post. But, as you can see from the above posts, we're also quick to invite you back to the dance. Sure made for a lively thread - frankly, I get a kick out of the fur flying in Letterville. I only regret that it's scared off some really good people here occasionally.

How does one reply to such nice remarks and welcomes? Thanks for the chance to get into the dance. I'll be around for quite some time and will try to provide some knowledge from my little one man shop.
And you did not scare me away YET! As a Tax Auditor of over 20 years, it takes alot more! And I travel a lot for the State, so you might want to look over your shoulder as you never know when or where I might turn up!
I was a Scout Master for some time until my son got too old and moved onto working with the local high school. As the Head Chaperone for the largest High School Band in Delaware, I had to work with over 220 students and their parents each season for 8 years.
Since my son is now at Univ. of MD, I retired that hat and looking for another one.
Our youth are the future, don't dictate, but provide guidance and help when asked.
Anyone interested in Glass Etching - Just give me a shout. That is my area of expertice! Over 25 years now!
Anyway.......
I'll be around once in a while.....
Thanks again,
SC

You just get grumpy cuzza the diabetes? You're lucky. My friend Lori sees flying monkeys. Carries that big honkin syringe around everywhere she goes, and she told me how to use it on her if anything went wrong. I told her "stick it WHERE?? I don't THINK so - better not do that to me!! Drink your juicy juice!!" hahahaha
She is signed up thru her Doctors in MN for one of those cell-transplant things. Nothing to screw around with.

After the ribbing you took, to stay "ON BOARD" is very commendable.
Before I go any further, I have to say in regards to this post, I am not a pro.......I am constantly learning, growing and have a long way to go.
I don't have Diabetes and know no one who has but, I do know what it's like to have a busy life like you. I too have a full time day job (signs- mass produced) and escape to my side sign business (more custom work) in the evening. I get 4-5 hours of sleep each night. Wake up at 5:30 and go to bed around midnight. 2 kids (7 yr old girl and a 15 month old girl so, those 4-5 hours of sleep gets interupted as well.
I know stress and I know what it's like to have a quick fuse on occasion.
Just know that alot of us are in the same boat (different lives but, ALWAYS BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL).
Thanks for not leaving and let me apologize for being quick to speak my mind......there are alot of us OPINIONATED people here and sometimes you KNOW IT (as in your first post).
