Have a crackled sign to do. Never done this. Been experimenting on other boards with different techniques and stuff.
The antiquing medium that came with the kit doesn't seem to work very well. In the step-by-step he used Patina. Anyone know what he was using? Thinks it's something I might already have handy in the shop?

Hey Joey. The kit I bought makes a clear crackle finish and you paint over it with antiquing medium which is part of the kit. I was hoping to find something similar that was a bit darker.
The step-by-step on the bullboard show the guy rubbing in a black looking substance he said was patina.
What about shoe polish??? Who knows. New to me too!

Amy, not sure what "kit" your're talking about, so please let me know as I love doing the antique signs. The stuff I use makes the cracks, then I bought a tube of black oil paint (like artists use. Find it at Michael's or any remotely decent art supply/craft supply.) It's about $3 a tube and lasts forever. Spread it on, let it sit for a while, then wipe it off and it leaves the paint in the cracks. Make sure the crackle you're using is completely set-up first.

Amy, I'm with Joey..........I get a great crackle finish by first painting a board with a dark latex enamel, let it form a "skin", then I paint on a coat of a light colored OneShot. Let it set for a couple of days, sand, and then rub on some strong black coffee and let it set for another day. Try it......it's easy.

Mike, Joey, How do you paint the wording on after it's all crackeled up. You would fill the cracks with fresh paint. The cracks should crack the words or pictorial as well.
If you know another way, let me know.

Amy try this. Layout and paint your panel, lettering and graphics included. Let dry completely then brush on a thin coat of gum-arabic which can be bought at art supply stores like MICHAELS, HOBBY LOBBY etc. As this dries the cracks will appear and dry in about 1-2 hours. As Kissy mentioned, get some artist oil color like burnt umber then like the Karate Kid wipe-on wipe-off. This will work fine and you don't have to re-letter. It all will look very real. You may want to do a test panel first. Rubbing a little dirt on sparingly adds to the aged look.
