Yep.. got a request via email from somebody wanting a tribal shaped graphic with a leopard print pattern! I have no problems with the tribal graphic part..
I figured I'd just burn a template outta acetate with a number of prints on it then use an airbrush, but then thought it might look just a little more real if I just did it freehand with a brush, maybe a little faster too.
Anyone else do this sort of thing before and used some other technique?
I'll most likely be using vinyl screen inks or automotive paints on this one.

I made a leopard skin look car tag one time. I just went to google images searched for a leopard skin print: printed it out, traced it by hand, scanned it in and vectorized it. It looked really convincing BUT mine was in all vinyl. I would probably freehand airbrush it UNLESS you need both sides to be a mirror image in which case I would make a template using the way I described and cutting something out to make it like carboard. Then I would airbush it. Thats the only way you will probably get two alike or close. Good luck and put a pix up when you get done

Thanks for the suggestions folks, not sure if they wanted it symmetrical but eh, I haven't ran across anyone quite that anal yet. Let'em count and measure all the spots..
Think I'm just gonna freehand this one.. that is if they go for it.

Hey Mike if it looks like that tag I did I'll look good but it'll look like crap on what its put on. My tag went on a silver 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Blahhhhhh!!!! What bad taste but they love it. I'll do anything a customer wants. I had a guy I did stripes on his truck the other day. I had a roll of Bronze I had ordered sitting there. Not the Antique bronze like on that Acura but Bronze, the ugly one and he immediatly had to have it. I told him that since his truck was metallic grey that I would put black or silver but he said "no, that's it right there" so I did it. Dadgum if it wasn't the ugliest thing I'd ever seen. Old guy came to pick it up and he was like "ohhh man is that ugly...but thats what color I picked....I should'a listened to you and gone with the silver" so he went home scraped it all off and I am getting paid a second time to do it.

funny that this should come up... i'm doing a giraffe pattern next week on a "tribal" motif sign. i looked at some pictures of giraffes -- google.com for the picture references -- and then i'm just going to wing it with a stabilo, a sponge, and a brush. i would choose the same approach for leopards.
for the leopard you could probably skip the brush and pencil, and do the whole thing with a sponge about the size of an egg, to give you a variety of irregular spots.(unless its a black leopard... they don't have spots!)

Well so far I havent heard anything back yet, she just asked if it could be done and I said "YES" then asked what kinda size she was thinking about and some other details. Guess I'm kinda surprised there are still people out there that don't check their email every day.
I was thinkin of the sponge route too..
Then it hit me.. why not print it? I got a high res digital camera that'll let me print an 88"x68" size image. Just snap a shot of some fabric and let someone with an Edge take a crack at it. Nah, I like the more hands-on approach.

Hey Mike, I always give a rendering too, I gave about 4 on that Acura and he picked the same one I liked. I am just amazed at the different tastes folks have. It is wild what some folks think is good looking.
