I've seen on some posts about "amine blush" having to be cleaned off WestSystems epoxy before it can be painted over.
Does this occur on PB resin as well? The reason I ask is because gold/size doesn't seem to adhere well to it. I mean it sticks OK but rubs off VERY easily. I've tried cleaning it with denatured alcohol, sanding it, and it still comes off easily. The stuff lookes great like it is but I would love to gild over it. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi Wayne,

I guess it is my fault that this amine blush thing came up. As far as the brand you are using--well--I am not familiar with it.

My main question on what you are using would be-- how long did you let it cure? The point there is that West Systems has a lengthy instruction book that comes with it, and they are real specific that it does not cure fast. Curing produces something called an "exothermic reaction" as it is setting up. In other words, it generates heat. It is also very specific about the ratios of the 2 parts that make up the resin. If they are off even a little bit, there will be problems.

The curing time is at least three days under the best of temperature/humidity conditions, longer if conditions are less than ideal.

Point of all this; were there specific instructions with the product you used, and mostly how long did you let it cure? If the two products are similar, then it may be that not enough time went by before your attempt to sand, size, gild, etc., and that the blush was still working its way out.

The kid and I are going to be real interested to see how all this works out, and good luck with it.

Thanks Bill,
The last test I tried with it had been curing for at least a couple of weeks. I don't have detailed instructions yet but will try to get some Monday. West Systems epoxy is supposed to be chemically different in some way from the other product but I don't know in what way. I will let you know when i find out anything because the gold looks awesome on top of that stuff!
thanks again!
