I really like using the vinyl and vinyl covered posts. You could also check into using aluminum ones.
But, for a rustic wood look, I would suggest pressure treated 4x6's. They seem to tend to twist and warp less tha 4x4's do. Cedar and redwood ones do not work very well here in contact witht the ground. For painting them, I sand them, rout off the sharp edges, dust them off thoroughly with a tack rag and compressed air and prime them with solid color acrylic latex stain. This seems to hold up best for me. If you so desire, you can topcoat the stain with two or three coats of acrylic latex paint.

I have a question on this subject also. Like Jamie I need to use wood posts this time. I was "pilfering" my husband's shed and found some treated posts that have been here for about 12 yrs. I know that if you age the treated, it paints better (no bleeding through) but is 12 yrs. too much?
Jamie, be careful when sanding, use protection against the arsenic used in pressure treating.
