What do you do, when you get a job with PMS color requirements, Paint? I'm not going to be able to compete with my competition, if I can't go the vinyl route, because I know they will just "wing it"...They always do. I really don't want to lose this one. It is 6X12 2 sided, 2 PMS colors on white background. Colors 273C and 465C. Thanks in advance. Jack

Jack, if you need to do vinyl, Avery makes some "Pantone approved vinyls" (A9 series films, up to 9 years outdoor they claim). I'm looking at my chart and unfortunately the colors you mentioned are not on there . However, they do have 274c in a translucent and 466c in an opaque. You might want to bounce these off of your client.
The 274c translucent over a white background is a good match for 273c from 5+ feet away. The 466c is just a hair lighter than the 465 spot color, but a dead ringer for the 465c process color in the solid to process guide.
Good luck with this one!

well, you have a few options. i would give the client the options, along with the costs -- let them decide. (at least you will show that you're able to meet their demands as well as offer alternatives). sometimes the colors are picked by a designer who doesn't realize the costs and they are often willing to adjust to meet the lower cost option. other times (especially with national corporations) the colors are VERY important, and they understand the extra costs are part of maintaining their image.
so, you can custom match PMS paints and use that, or you can have PMS colors screen printed onto vinyl. Gregory offers five custom color sheets of vinyl,15" x 72", for $215. yes, its expensive, but its the PMS color. the third option is to find a standard vinyl "close" to the color they want, and ask them if it is close enough.

Our local supplier of grip flex paint has an intermix station. We just order a qt. of whatever pms color. Then we spray it on the vinyl and cut. For outdoor long term, we clear coat it.

a la Duncan, Matthews also can match PMS colors, and you spray away, but with no clear-coating necessary!! I saw some sprayed on 220 and I thought it was custom-coloured vinyl- plus you can control the gloss. If the customer wants anything from matte to flashlight-bright, MAP will do it!! Plus then you can spray many other things- his frames, etc.
Read the fine print on Avery's new chart- a lot of them are 7-year vinyls. A9 is more a moniker than a rating.

When you explain to the customer the difference in price for "almost" and "match" you not only let him know what the options are, youlet him know that you care enough about his identity to try to get it right.
I have several customers that do not want to pay the added cost to get the correct color, but they still pay me(usually more than the other shops in town) to do their work because I "care" enough to show them the options.
