Following up on Santo's post about cutting aluminum panels, using cheap vinyl to mask the panel before it was cut was suggested. I have used pre-mask for the same purpose and it works fine and I think it's a lot cheaper. Has anyone had any problems with the pre-mask that I haven't encountered yet?

Another method that I have used is to put strips of sandblast resist on the foot of the jig saw.

Anybody else have other ways of accomplishing this?

Just wondering...

when cutting with transfer tape, make sure to cut going off the top of the overlapped material! Otherwise the tape curls underneath the foot of the jigsaw and peels up with the passing of the saw.

we have also used the fuzzy side of velcro on the bottom of our saws... works pretty well!

I've always used masking tape on the foot of the saber saw. On the recent job, I added an additional wide outline to my graphic and applied it at the same time. I left the application tape on and cut. The darker paint mask was easier to see. I came back with a orbital sander to even out the edges. then I removed the application tape and was ready to paint. I'm trying to get to where I'll just pounce on the applied application tape, but still depend heavily on the paint mask.

Use premask all the time. If I'm really worrid, I'll just double up on it. Lots easier to get off than vinyl too. [Cool]

I have done all of the above. I also have a 4" thick 4' x 8' piece of white beaded Styrofoam. I cut on it. The 4" piece is thick enough to use both sides.
