Hay Kats I was watching this movie last night called john Q and got me thinking after I broke down in tears first what would I do in this guy situation? (his situation Was that his son got sick and needed a transplant and because of his money situation they told him the could not do anything for his son) it is a real eye opener but I was thinking what would I do? and if one of us hade to raise money how many of us could really help honestly I would love to help somebody with 1,2,3,10 thousand but could not but I would organize the biggest and baddest fund raiser this state had seen and you can take that to the bank

Right-on Roel. All that is required of some of us this lifetime is to hold our light high for others less fortunate. It is also OK to help when we can. But...as uncaring as it may seem to some, we are all responsible for our own version of reality...because we create it...100%
P.S...for those that can't seem to get thier minds around these comments...oh-well...perhaps another lifetime. Life is all about experience...both good and bad.

Far too many people in this world refuse to realize that the world owes them nothing and that we are all responsible and accountable for what we do.
It is, however, a whole lot easier to blame others for the misfortunes that seem to plaque elements of our society. It really seems to be the thing to do. Why accept the blame when you can pass the buck?
As far as the movie goes, I didn't see it. I don't have any children so I honestly can't relate for those kind of feelings. I think a lot of people would do more if they could.
I will look in the listings on the tube for the next showing.
Have a great one!

Well Roel, I'll tell you how it is in the real world.
I won't go into the details concerning my infant grandson's medical condition as there are several older posts here that tell our story.
My family and I rec'd many kind words of encouragement and prayer from members here on the board. Several of these contacts have developed into what I believe to be lasting freindships with frequent emails, etc.
Now with that said. I believe that in general people frankly do not care. Period. In trying to raise funds just for my grandson's home health care (daily therapy visits- speech, physical, developmental not to mention his medicines)I have found that people really seem not to care since they have not had such a medical situation happen close enough to them to really "burn" the sense of emergency of the situation into their personal lives.
Trust me, I would never want anyone to go through what my family has the past several months. It has devastated us emotionally and finacially. Attempting to raise money has proven to be the most difficult and discouraging thing we have ever attempted to do in our lives. As one "friend" said...it is much easier to raise money for a political campaign than to raise money for a sick child. How true.
We even followed his doctor's advice and had a local bank set up a special account for his expenses and we have published this information here on the board and passed it on to other personal/business contacts. The result after nearly a month......less that $200 total has been deposited in the account and that has all come from several friends here in Letterville.
Some people have said ..."just tell us what you all need". Well when you're the one doing the "telling" it becomes kinda difficult. But you reach a point that when someone asks, you simply don't beat around the bush...you tell them. And you know what the most common response given is "well we'll see what we can do".....and in our case "what" never gets done and you are still left needing.
So much for "good intentions".
Others both here and in our local area have made great promises but we have not seen any result and they in time even appear to be avoiding us...I quess out of fear we may ask about these promises.
It's really a sad situation. There are rehabilitation products and therapies right now available for my grandson that could literally turn his life around in this important first year ofhis life. But we don't have the financial resources. It's sad in many medically related cases that money and/or the lack of money dictates the type and availability of care you can be afforded.
Apologizes for being wordy but it does hit a nerve in me.
We have prayed about my grandson's condition and trust that God will not put more on us than we can bear. It is this faith that is sustaining us these days.

The situation in that movie was a working guy that had health insurance through his employment and was supposed to be covered. Work had slowed down to where he was only doing half time and the employer went to a lesser coverage without notifying the policyholders. In a moment of crisis he found out his son would not be insured for his need. Many folks are getting jacked around by insurance companies. There doesn't seem to be equitable security even for many that pay dearly. I'm scared to consider the things that wouldn't be covered by my $400 a month policy.

I wonder like many that my monthly health insurance payments are giving me a false sense of security. Who knows when the time comes what they actually will cover? From other people's experiences, I am probably in for a few surprises.
Stan, maybe part of your problem getting help from the community stems from people's belief that government or some charitable organization will take care of you. Can you blame them for thinking that way with all the myriad of social programs we are taxed for. Another is, many think what can my measly $10 or $20 do to help?
It may be trite, but true, "laugh and the world laughs with you, cry, and you cry alone". It seems all of us are pretty much on our own when tragedy hits our families. We all have experienced that.

I would invite those interested to catch a movie that HBO made and ran a month or so ago. It was called "Damaged Care", and was a docu-drama based on real companies, people, and events.
It painted a picture not unlike many of the other corporate scandals that are showing up on an almost daily basis. In this instance it was insurers screwing over insurees.
Short version was that an HMO was routinely refusing to pay for all sorts of medical/surgical items that were covered, by using all the lame excuses imaginable. Main character was a young female doctor who had a job in oversight and had the say in what was paid, and what was refused. She found out her decisions were being overridden by a review board below her in the chain of command. She would say "pay" and the review people would say "no pay".
She argued that this was wrong and was greeted with some song and dance about better "allocation of resources." When she left work that evening, as she walked through the lobby she noticed a large metal sculpture being assembled there on the floor. She asked about it and found out the company had spent a half million dollars for this thing. So much for "better resource allocation."
Along about then her conscience got the better of her, and she went on a whistle-blowing expedition. A Congressional investigation followed, and as usual, not a whole hell of a lot came of it.
I know, way off topic, but any of us could find ourselves in the same leaky boat, and there is always some pin-striped "suit" willing to pull the plug the rest of the way out.
One other aside---I noticed a news item on CNNHN the other day that said the drug companies spend twice as much on advertising as they do on research. Rhetorical question--why am I not surprised? Go the heavy advert route-- sell what they already have-- show piety by claiming to empower the medicine buying public, pressure Congress to extend patents and keep the cheaper generics off the market as long as possible. The hypocrisy of these people is almost beyond belief IMLTHO.
"Ask your Doctor if ( insert product name here) is right for you." Most of the MDs I know really hate this tactic, saying that their patients are too often convinced that some pill or other is a magic bullet for whatever ails them.
Better days are coming, and hang on to your Confederate money.

Bill, I like the title "Damaged Care", how true! My Dr. and Friend Mark, calls it "Mangled Care", and is a patient advocate. Doctors can tell you horror stories. Hospitals have become large businesses and some will bump a doctor off staff if he doesn't sell out to the system. It's a circle of strife, ins. hospitals, doctors, drug companies, and patients who in the past "raped" the insurance system. Everything goes around full circle. The sick & elderly are paying for something that simply got out of hand.
Roel, my sister was telling me about the movie this morning and said that Denzell Washington gave a great performance.

Paint no one wanted Hillary's plan, because they knew that when such a large sum of money is poorly managed and pilfered then the plan is just words on paper.
