Mr Gold(as I am told is Rick Glawson's nickname)with Esoteric Supply called and set me straight on detecting the tin side of glass without a special short wave blacklight(typical blacklight bulbs will not work because they are imitation and "long wave") Short wave detects metals in the glass...
and he said no other method is available except a piece direct from factory to see where they scored the top side.
Hope that helps eveyone else...
I spent 4 days with the great Fred Self and he said...heck...Rick's not an artist...he is a chemist...I have never met someone with so darn much knowledge of their trade as Rick...definately the man to call with questions!
Thanks Rick

Come on now, you at least can let us know why you want to know which side has tin. Do you expect it to rust quicker? Only the lower kt content has more tin, and why bother when you don't have to be concerned when using 23kt? After using gold for at least 50 years, this question has never come up.

Your exactly correct...there are no issues with your higher gold contents...as a matter of fact, Rick Glawson said the tin side might have a bit more tooth in it for gold adhesion.
but...when I do any kind of new work or work in an area that we are new in, I like to set a precedence for my staff...and there will be times when this will become something that will have to be recognized and dealt with...
therefore I start right from the beginning by saying...always check for the tin side before choosing your face...that way there should never be a problem or issue arise from it and it becomes a natural part of the process.
Then, once we start using silver leaf or angel guilding, I will not have to explain why it tarnished and I have been told it will if placed onto the tin side. It will also effect the outcome when slumping or fusing the glass which will be a process that we will attempt as we become more proficient in our capabilities.
Once I establish the protocol in a process, I implement that as a step in acheiving the final product. It saves me a lot of grief when we are doing intricate work and has served me well in the past.
hope that clears the air on my request as I journey down this very exciting road of dicovery.
