I need goals in my life... professional goals and personal goals. Its a way to measure myself and push myself along, especially when I don't feel like it.
Some goals are very long term, some very short. But goals in my life make a huge difference.
If I'm doing a job I'm not too fond of I'll set some quantity goals... to do a certain amount or finish a large portion before lunch for instance, even if it means I delay lunch a little. The good part is I tend to push and then after lunch a large part of the project is behind me.
But somehow I tend to always to be a little greedy in my goals... I often want to achieve more than humanly possible or so it seems. But I always seem to pull off my objective.
Other goals are very long term. Some I have been working on for 10 or 15 years. These are the tough ones. But through the process of dreaming and working hard to achieve these 'impossible' goals much is achieved. I learn patience and perseverance. I learn to save and plan ahead.
I also learn to take little steps each day to bring these huge milestones into being.
I also have learned to celebrate when I reach every goal I set. Do the jobs I hate and the reward is doing what I love. It may be a coca cola and a donut. It may be a relaxing moment while I sit in the sunshine and admire the project accomplished. Sometimes it may be an all out party with family and friends.
And then its off to realize the next goal.
Ain't life fun!!

I try to do my best at whatever it is I do and very rarely even turn down whatever project, big or small. With every project or simple task I'm amazed at what can be done when you put your heart into it. Never have I found any job as rewarding as holding a brush in my hand.
My goals have always been simple though others may choose different paths, I chose to be direct and to the point. I love what I do and who I am.
We have all made mistakes throughout our lives and my goal was always to pick up and learn from them.

Thanks Dan for a great reminder. It seems that the people who accomplish the most are the ones (like you) who can see a goal out there in the future and then figure out the steps to get there. And, have the discipline to stick with it.
If we don't know where we are going how will we ever know when we get there?
Now, what was it that I was going to do today?

It is good to write your goals down.... I have been doing that since we opened 5 years ago, and it is really funny to see the difference in the goals. it really shows how we have grown and how our priorities have changed over the years.

In 1996, I set some goals for myself. First, I wanted to return to school and earn a college degree. I also wanted to start a small business. One that I could run as a 1 person shop that would allow me to earn reasonable profit using the skills I had, and skills that I could develope. I know some people started thinking I had lost it, but I thought that if I waited and in a few short years, I would turn 50 years old and still be in the same situation or put my plans into motion and see how they turned out. Here's where I stand:
On the schooling, I have 2 classes remaining in the core curriculum and I have to submit some professional coursework for credits to receive a business degree in information systems. I had to take a 1 year work-related break from my studies.
I have been running my sign business on the side since 1997. I expanded from vinyl only to begin providing painted signs and and have begun airbrushing and continue to practice to develope pinstriping skills. I had to relocate my shop in 1999 and start new again. I still work as a 1 person shop doing all sales, design, and production. The business is debt-free.
I echo Raymonds comments. I love work hard succes stories!
