I would like to do some engine turning on gold leaf for a antique race car. Can anyone please give any tips on what would work good to perform this ? I believe a piece of velvet might work ? I hope I can turn out cool looking numbers! Thanks.

Hi John,
Welcome Aboard! you will find that alot of topics have already been discussed here. At the top of the page on the right click on 'search' from there type in gold, gold leaf, gilding, etc...
gold leaf, and burnishing is a subject that can get highly detailed, but yes a cotton ball inside a piece of velvet is the basic "burl bag" somepeople wrap the cotton over a pencil or something then wrap the velvet around and tie or tape it shut, also alot of people have modified it to put in the end of a drill for quick easy turnning

here is a thread that I started on the subject a while back... turning gold

Hi John!

Welcome to Letterville.

You might want to consider a SignGold Starter Kit, available from ND GRAPHICS...Great value for money and you will find that we offer 3 different "ready made" engine turns to work with.

Jon

Jon, read again, this is an antique race car!!!!!! Sign gold would be as appropriate as computer controlled tuned port fuel injection [Frown]

John, do a few practice pieces first til you get the "feel" of it.

John, invest a few $ in the "LaBlanc" book on gold leaf techniques, it's been up-dated by "Kent Smith". It' worth it's weight in "GOLD"! You should be able to buy it from one of the many merchants here, or Amazon.
Good luck.

The traditonal way to do this is to take a ball of surgical cotton and "twist" the ball on the gold so that it burnishes the gold in the manner that you seek. This will take some practice so if I were you,...a test panel is in order, if you have never tried or done this before.Another way is to use "spinnits" in a drill. They are sold by Sepp Leaf. try www.seppleaf.com . These are manufactured specifically with engine turning gold in mind and they allow much more control over the process once you get used to using them.

George:

I stand corrected. My 21st century schitzoid brain connected "gold", "engine" and "turn" and spit out the post above.

Still, you have to admit that "computer controlled tuned port fuel injection" sounds like an improvement every antique could use...and speaking of coffee makers...
