My friend calls up and says he needs a surfboard for his business sign. This will be indoors so it doesn't have to be made of steel or aluminum. I'm thinking of some sort of foam - HUD? Are there others that I should consider? I'll probably be cutting, rounding edges, painting w/gradients, etc. so I can't have it "melt" when I paint it.
For mounting purposes we'll be screwing a couple of "L" angle iron lengthwise (probably using aluminum) into the back so it should be strong enough to have those screwed in. If there is any other substrate that I should use instead I'd be glad to hear about it. Bueller?

I used to make surfboards back in the 60's using high density foam board, shaping it, then fibre-glassing it using cloth and resin. The resin can be tinted in whichever color or in your case, painting it.

Just a thought, surfboards eventually get retired if too many minor dings on the bottom make repairs cost prohibitive. I'm sure there are more here then in the Pacific Northwest, but I wouldn't doubt that you could find a few boards to choose from for $45 - $50 with a great shape & reasonablly smooth deck. If the bottom is dinged up or the fins are broken it could still be a quick paintjob away from being a very suitable signblank with accurate shape, profile, rail contour & rocker curve.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll make a few calls to some of the 2nd hand sport shops and watersports type shops and see if they have anything like it, even if the board has some dings I can certainly fill holes, dents, etc and give it a quick repaint.

Brian, you might also want to look into the foam blanks they sell for surfboards.. They're cast in the basic shape already, and since it's just for a sign you wont have to add stringers or anything to it, just 'glass over the sucker and paint it.

A real one is the way to go, as long as you have the proper size requirments for the sign. They come in many lengths. I have a couple surfboards hanging in my house that I picked up used for roughly $45 - $50. They had a few dings, etc. I painted, flamed, and striped them up. Very kool! They make great coffee tables too. Check ebay. Go to the sporting goods section. There is a whole surf section there. If you type in surfboards, you won't get much. Why, I don't know. Ask ebay. The last time I checked, there was a bunch.
