Yesterday afternoon my main computer wouldn't boot up. It hung at the "memory check" part of boot-up. Took it to my local computer guy and he tried it ..same result. He put in some kind of card that checks codes and determined that it WAS the memory check that was causing a halt. he pulled out the 2 RAM sticks and stuck in tow different ones and everything was OK. I couldn't see buying 2 new 256 meg chips if one was still OK so he replaced one at a time and sure enough, both of mine were still OK. Musta been a loose seat in the socket or something.
Took the computer home...same problem again. Took it back..it still worked fine for him...figured that since the keyboard is checked before memory, maybe MY keyboard was faulty..(well it was covered in several years of nicotine and ashes etc!!!). Brought the computer AND a new keyboard home...Still wouldn't boot.
NOW this is getting annoying..it works at his place but not at mine??? Do I have a computer that likes car rides???
Called him up..He suggested unplugging from the UPS/battery backup and plugging directly into the wall recepticle... VOILA!!!! it worked! Tried plugging into the regular surge protector..no work. HAD to be pluged into the wall recepticle directly. Turns out that the power supply was getting tired and when it was plugged into anything OTHER than the wall recepticle it suffered a slight power loss that hung the computer!!! OK..easy cheap fix another $50 to pop in a power supply..Everything works GREAT now.
While there I asked about networking my main puter w/win2000 running NT file system to my laptop w/Win98SE running FAT32. He said he thought it should work OK...(this was after a suggestion by Mike McCloud last week that it could be done..THANKS MIKE!!!)...Now I have a functioning main puter so I decide to give the networking thing a whirl. After about an hour of screwing around with settings and passwords etc. ....IT WORKS!...I dunno how biut Win 98 with FAT 32 file system can read Win 2000 with NTFS!!!!! I figured that that was impossible...
So!!! a good day and an even better day!
Life is GOOD!!!!

On the networking thing.. it works because Win98 is going through Win2K to read the files.. ie: Win2K is "translating" the file system and making it available.
If you had Win98 installed on the same machine as Win2K (on another partition or drive, with a Dual Boot setup), no Win98 would not be able to read the NTFS partitions, in fact they probably wouldnt even show up.
