Usually when designing for the web I try to design so it's at least functional in both browsers 4+ figuring if it works in 4 it must work in 5 ... then I hear NS6 isn't backwards compatable with some dhtml/java scripts. Does anyone using NS6 notice a lot of messed up pages on the web? See... I'm re-working my day jobs website and I'm trying a different way to navigate and display thumbnails. I tested in IE4,IE5,AOL,NS4.7 and was happy after I got a thumbnail script working after 6 hrs. Then the boss checks it in IE5.5 and it's a mess (he might not have cleared cache)
Should all the powers of the net be sacrificed for simplicity because the next browser to come out might not read whats already been there?
If you wouldn't mind checking my test page (actually two pages in frames) and tell me if it works for you I would really appreciate it. The page - http://www.slamgraphics.com/pie

I like the look of the page and the use of scripts. Very nice. I wonder though about the ability of search engines to spider javascript generated links.
I have also just set up a new improved website. So far I haven't tested it beyond my own machine. So I just hope it works too.
One thing I notice which is a problem. I designed for version4 at 800x600 but I still see some visitors come in with version 3 browser at 640x480. Around 10%
Checked it out on IE 5.5 and NS 4.76 and works they way I believe you intended. NS6 is not so lucky. The rollover for the pictures does not work and "about-services-contact" is not centered on the bar and the rollovers don’t function either.
I have had NS6 on one of my machines for a few weeks now. It’s different and will take some time to warm up to. (Remember the old BB and how many people balked at this new one.) Yes, many pages do not look/act like they are intended. Some of this is the browser but much of it is people putting content up that does not conform to the W3C standards. NS6 is built upon the Gecko engine base which is, all things being relative, very W3C compliant.
You can install NS6 parallel with an existing edition, as it doesn’t interfere with prior versions. Easy to uninstall if needed as well, unlike IE 5.5.
I encourage you to check out this 3rd party NS6 FAQ and also go to Netscape news server (secnews.netscape.com). Once on the news server, drill down to netscape.public.beta groups to read about problems and solutions of the released version of NS6. Also take a peek into netscape.public.mozilla groups to find out what is really going on, expected timetables, and the ability to download the latest code base.
It will take some time for people to get use to NS6, but the ability to play with and make customized skins will lead to some interesting versions. We could even see a “letterhead” version of NS6. Who knows?

Thanks for checking guys. and thanks for the links Bob ... now to start making heads or tails of Maybe it's time to start working on my flash programing skills ... then it's either you have it or don't. Eventually when I make an opening page (for the spiders ... because they don't like frames either)maybe I'll make a link for a simpler page set-up without the dhtml and javascripting.

It also worked fine at the office with NT4.0 and IE5.
No, search engines wont spider links generated by javascript NOR links tied into ImageMaps.
This is why I have neither of those things on my site anymore. I used to use imagemaps heavily, with all kinds of rollovers and such, then learned those links behind the imagemaps are not followed by search engine spiders, which means your site doesnt get indexed AT ALL.
Flash presents the same problems.. you still need actual content and text links on your site for the spiders to crawl your site and index your pages.
Flash is pretty cool though. I used it to build a kickass new GUI for my windows desktop. I made some tricky animations and buttons that link to all my programs.. does some pretty cool stuff. =) One day I was bored and thought to myself "It would be really cool to find a way to make a new Windows Interface with Flash".
Then I realized I have Win98 with the active desktop, meaning you can use an HTML document as a Wallpaper.. which ultimately means you can put flash on a web page then use that page as a wallpaper.. it works!! =)
