Warning-- this may be a long post.

Stan's situation with Christian got me to thinking about how many kids here in our own country have big-time and long lasting problems.

As most of you know, I spent most of my working career as an ER/RN at the local hospital. This was mostly on the late shift, so we didn't see too many kids, unless they were acutely ill.

I never realized until some years after I left that job how many, many challenged children there are out there. This was brought home to me one weekend when I went to the next-door county to sign up for an intro to computers course. It happens that the community college there has some sort of weekend day care program for these children, and they are bused in from all over that county. The thing that struck me was the incredible number of buses that appeared, and all of them full of these developmentally disabled kids.

This is not to knock Christain's situation in any way, and I would be glad to contribute to a fund for him. But, I think we need to remember that he isn't alone, nor are his parents. There are any number of "worthy organizations", and some not so worthy raising money for all kinds of goals. Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy, are three worthy ones that come to mind. Maybe though, we ought to be thinking more about the kids, and less about the Pandas.

Most of us make a fairly decent living. Not all of us, of course. Those of us who can afford to donate a few dollars here and there-- maybe we should be thinking of organizations like the local Association for Retarded Children, or here in NY Pathfinder Village, which is a residence program for Downe's Syndrome children and adults.

I am sure you all can think of other programs deserving of support-- a couple that occur --- Tourette's Syndrome, and Autism.

Think about it, please.

Of course you are right, Bill.

Stan and (by relation) Christian are "two of our own", but there are needy people everywhere.

Perhaps we Letterheads should consider organizing some kind of fundraising program. Could be a "Letterville cause of the year", as selected by democratic process.

Why don't we start with Christian and company and build from there?
