i'm pretty independent, so its often hard for me to know what others want in a job. (its my business, so i get to choose how it works -- employees don't get that luxury).

i'd really like to hear from people who are working for others about what keeps you going back to work every day? or, what jobs did you have that you really enjoyed, and what made that job a good one?

Employee here ... didn't start out to be ...
while in college for a business management degree (to run my own the smart way) responsibilities came a little faster than intended and I needed a job/insurance.

Worked at factory screenprinter (hated it) then landed at my present employer (11years ago) ... a small family run shop.
I really like my bosses and have run of the shop.
We have a good understanding after all these years ... they bring the work in, I get the work out. They pay me well and I bust ass to turn a profit .
It’s a very good understanding ... about as close to running my own without having to do all the government or client BS myself.
They refer side work that we don’t handle at shop direct to me (airbrush, web design), put my supplies on their accounts (wholesale) ... every once and a while will hand me a Benny just to say thanks out of the blue… I never worry if I have to go suddenly (school nurse calls, wife has a flat) ... nobody gives me crap.
I run all my side work that we do at shop, through the shop ... it’s a real team effort all they way around.
Every job goes through my hands ... bosses don’t sell new things without asking me how we should do it … I trust them to make sure they charge enough.
I feel more than needed ... they KNOW they would be screwed without me ... because while they research sales techniques I research how to DO what they sell.
I made them subscribe to the trade magazines and I swear I’m the only one in the shop who reads them ... to the rest of the crew it’s just a paycheck ... which is probably why mine is bigger even though I’ve been there the least amount of time.
It aint all peaches and cream and most of the work there bores me but it’s a real good situation for me.

Well, I started out as an employee, but it was as the boss's kid. Does that count?

i never have worked as an employee in a sign shop!! applied for a couple jobs at different ones...but they wanted me to work for less then i was makin at other jobs i had.
i was taught,10-12 yrs old(not as an employee, was never paid)by an old shakey jake. he liked me and saw i had interest in signs..so he would take me on jobs...to hand him brushes, mix paint, and just to let me learn. when i finally decided to do this full time...i was 42.....and just went out lookin for work.....

Let's see....I get paid, that's a pretty good reason to show up. If I need time off all i have to do is ask. Nobody tells me what to do as long as the work is getting done. Nobody questions my layouts, pricing, or methods. I love this job, the hours are great, and I work for really good people. I don't have to worry about payroll taxes, paying the rent, keeping the lights turned on, buying materials or hiring employees. The worst I get is the occassional bad customer and I'm actually beginning to enjoy that.

From my standpoint I get to do all of the fun stuff and somebody else gets to do all of the work. Now what's wrong with that?
