I have always hated that "Corperate" bull*hit. I did it for a while (Not signs), I was a manager. I felt RAPED after I finally got tired of it and QUIT! Your just a name and number. Reckon AutoZone will start doing graphics on cars before long? The ONLY thing I can say is advantageous to working for a "Chain" are the benifits like Insurance and Retirements. Most time you'll get screwed somehow on those too.

I read the entire post and found it great for persons who are looking at signage as a trade rather then a craft. We always knew this was bound to happen, and in reality could prove very well for those who work for others including family, such as Glenn Taylor, right Glenn? Some may think the opportunity is in owning your own business and yet others with a different goal will find this a great way to screw over the mom and pop shops who in reality found signmaking such an easy task to begin with.
I kiss the ground I walk on knowing that hand painted stuff will be around for as long as I'll be on this here planet.
Don, that seems like the opportunity you've been waiting for, knowing that you may get in on the ground floor and have a decent future.

Anything may work well for anyone if it is what they want. And if you want to be some sort of mindless automaton who doesn't care about what you produce, so be it. That's not for me.
Let me tell you something, I do not look at this as a just some sort of "trade any more than you look at pinstriping as "just a bunch of painted lines." If I did, I wouldn't care about what my stuff looked like.
I've paid my dues - everything from handlettering billboards and walls, to digging sign foundations in pure muck, to hand carving, to gold leaf on glass. And, yes, some straightline pinstriping too.
Ain't nothing been handed to me (except a push broom). I had to learn it and earn it.

Glenn I just mentioned you as an example because not only do I like you, but you're a stand up guy like myself, and I know you wouldn't take it as a flame like some others on this board.
It seems that Kinkos will not be much of a quicky sticky as some may think, if they hire the correct personal to run their Gerbers. I don't think any company would buy the best and most expensive equipment just to do do some coroplast real estate signs.

Kinko's out here is selling inkjet banners for $8 a square foot or so, and that is on banner roll stock. They do have ups and extras. For instance, that is just a printing charge, and grommets are extra. I suppose you either take in your own art or pay them extra to create it.
The goal IMO is to loss lead with banners until they have people coming in to their shop regular, then the prices will go up.
There's no reason they can't be as successful as Fast Signs, however successful that is. Fast Signs doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon.

Do you mean to tell me that there's another industry bullboard I have to keep track of?!?!?!?! This is gonna gat to be a full-time position.
I can't really add much to the Kinko's debate at this time, other than to say that "DR CAS" rules!
I am curious to hear more feedback from you guys as soon as Kinko's becomes a clear and present threat.
