I am faced with having to purchase a new computer and need to make some decisions on the operating system. Does anyone out there have any feedback on what they are using with success with Omega? Windows 98 is still being offered on new computers but it feels like I'm moving backwards by purchasing it new all over again. I've heard not so good things about Windows 2000 and Gerber does not yet support XP. Win 98 will not be offered much longer on new systems so time is running out.

I recently got a new computer w/ XP pre-installed. I partitioned the HD to run W98 on it for one older program. I will replace that program w/ a XP compatible alternative & then can take my same machine back up to use strictly in XP.

Others know more, but I have heard success w/ Omega on 2000, & some use on XP as well.

Hi Sherye,

I use it to drive my Edge system and my Odyssey plotter. I'm told Omega 1.56 is due to be released in the next week or two. It is XP compatable. Currently, I'm running Omega on Windows Me, XP Home, and XP Pro. I've not had any problems at all.

Success? To be perfectly frank, some people love it, some don't. I prefer to use a different software when I'm doing my designing. I have a staff member who loves Omega and hates the program I prefer. So, I think it all comes down to what you are used to and what your preferences are.

Have you tried using XP's compatability mode(right-click on the shortcut->properties->compatability) to run the program in a 95 or 98 environment? It's easier than dual booting [Smile]

Roger,
Yes I tried that first. I was hopeful, but the program in question is casmate & it is a persnickity little s.o.b. I was not able to get it to work & spent some serious time making my best attempt. I just boot to 98 all day, every day, but when I switch over to Flexi 7 (next month) I will then be able to enjoy XP.

I've been running Omega on an XP machine for about 5 months now with no problems.

Like Glenn said, it's all a matter of personal preference. It's not a bad program, but it is pricey. I do probably 90% of my design work in Corel then import it into Omega for output. The only time that I really use it extensivly is when I'm working on tricky Edge jobs with a boatload of spot colors that require traps, bleeds, and the like.

I will say that the Gerber's software makes output periferal (plotters, routers, etc.) setup a snap, especially the Gerber machines, and does an admirable job spooling and managing jobs to be output.
