My cousin who owns a business in Texas called and told me he pulled up to his building the other day to find one of his $2,000 dollar air conditioning units had been stolen. They actually ripped it away from the building and drove off with it. This wasn't a window type unit either! His deductable was $1,500 so he is basically screwed for $2,000.

Seems more and more the theme of these times is: If you can't afford it, steal it!

Everything is justifiable these days, and nobody takes responsibility for their actions it seems.

Do you have a "Great American Rip-off Story"?

Great Canadian version 1.0:
During the Ice Storm in Montreal a couple of years ago, there was no power for over 75% of the area for a week or more (some up to a month!). Every available generator in all of North America was sourced, and they started to flood in, and were being kept in a lot just outside of the downtown core. some "enterprising" individual(s) stole every single one (75? 100? I don't remember how many), causing hundreds of thousands of people to live in sub-zero (January) weather for several days without power.

Part 2- our great oil companies immediately hiked the price of gas almost 100% to cash in on our great tragedy. I still won't buy Petro-Canada gas because of this.

I had a preacher steal the tips off of the tables I was waiting one time (about 10 of them, average $3-5 bucks a table) and I actually saw him do it. Man ain't that awful?

I had a 50x30 steel woodworking shop built a few months ago.
The local building dept. required a copy of engineered plans and one of the contract, which was for $17,500. The cost of the building ended up being $18,345.(I had to have extra foundation work). So, they knew what the building cost.

The building inspector valued the building at $97,500!! This made my permit cost $467.

When I asked the inspector why so much he said that he had nothing to do with the rate.....it was set by the state. So, after he saw that I was gonna be persistent, he finally asked me did my shop have central heat and air. When I said no he said they had made a mistake and the value of the building would be dropped to $47.500. Do you think the permit was cut in half?....Not on your life. I think it ended up being $270.

I later found out that the building inspector is paid commission! And, he has YET to inspect the building. Hope it's safe.

Want to see pics of my $97.5k metal building with no plumbing, or A/C and heating?

Hey John,
A little advice

When someone even mentions their religion when trying to close a business deal of any kind......run the other way.

Someone here has stolen an 18' enclosed trailer belonging to the U.S Coast Guard
It was full of highly expensive gear & emergancy rescue equipment. Maui is a small place & not only to hide it, but to ever sell anything from it on any kind of black market is going to be very difficult. My guess is that it will bwe recovered within a few months.

The transportation squadron here on the base recieves a brand new road grader on Friday. On Saturday, someone loads it on a trailer and drives it off the base in broad daylight. That happened about 10 years ago.

Then there was the little twerp in our squadron who wrecks his Ford Probe. Gets the insurance money, done deal. Apparently he test drives another Probe, gets a copy of the key made while he's out. Sees the car 6 months later and steals it. he takes the VIN # off of his wrecked car- puts it on the new one. Old car is then cut up with a cutting torch. Done deal, (so far he's gotten away with this, because he drove the stolen car to work every day). Then, his wifes car is stolen,(it wasn't) and he claims this to his insurance. Insurance companies red flags start wavin, and he's caught. I think he got 4 years.

Several years ago, a friend of mine running a 102' dragnetting boat found a large round strange looking bouy floating loose following a rather severe storm. He and his crew hoisted the bouy aboard and brought it in. They hoisted it from the boat onto a flatbed truck and he drove it to his oceanfront home and set it in the yard.

Well, Tino thought it might be worth something, so he sent out the word that he might know where this bouy is and that it's for sale.

Meanwhile, there are low flying planes trying to find this thing. It turns out to be a sophisticated weather bouy that sends signals to satellites, and is constantly being monitored.

Soon the FBI and secret service and maybe some random KGB'ers come knocking at Tino's door giving him the opportunity to get the crane to load this back on a truck, have it properly crated, and ship it down to San Francisco or go to prison without a trial and no one will ever see him or his family again.

He never got a thank you from them.

Dell computers is only 40 miles south of me - several years ago someone drove into their facility, hooked up to a 18 wheeler trailer and drove off with it full of computers. Now, that takes guts...and a little help from someone inside.

back when i was a teen,(60's in penna)this guy worked at a steel mill and guys would car pool to drive(20 miles 1 way) to the mill. he parked his car at this intersection where all the workers met and parked there cars and then all went to the mill. well he gets back from his shift 3-11, and his tires and rims are gone! car is sittin on the ground!! so he gets a ride to a local bar.

Two quick ones from my days living in Philadelphia -
Philly Naval Shipyard, the USS Independence is in for a major rebuild. A 10'x 40' by 4" piece of steel was cut from the flight deck. Someone used a Navy flatbed truck to steel this mult-ton steel patch, drove out the back gate, and sold the patch, truck, trailer and all for scrap.
A bronze statue of grecco-roman wrestlers was stolen from a city park. An eyewitness stated the statue was stolen by two men, who picked it up and placed it in a pickup truck, and drove off. The statue weighed something like 5,800 lbs. Either the witness ain't real reliable, or those are the two strongest guys I've ever heard of!
