If you're painting directly on the ice nthere's a special type of paint that you must use.. believe it or not it's called "Ice Paint" many arenas have the paint on hand. I't's a water based product, D'uh.. and it goes on very wet. you make a pattern out of card or corex and scratch the outline of the lettering into the ice.. that's the way I did it. Good Luck!

Desire, I'm glad to tell you that I asked the exact same question here a few month ago and with the helpful instructions I got, especially from Dennis, I was able to do the job successfully. I was kind of scared to tackle it, because it was completely new terrain for me, but it turned out to be easy and fun. Ask the caretakers of the rink from where they get the paint to do the lines, it is made for that specific purpose. Make a pounce pattern, use paper that is not to thin, freeze the paper corners to the ice, pounce, than paint from the inside out, using natural bristle brushes. The paint freezes immediately. It is important that you spray several light mists of water over the completed painting before it is flooded over or the paint will dissolve. E-mail me if you have more questions. Good luck!
The guy who phoned me say that the previous seasons they used a white fabric or a white plastic sheet with the letters painted on it. I think it could had been Tyvek. I don't understand why they don't use the same material than for the lines. I need to phone to this guy tomorrow for more informations.
The problem with specific paints is that the ice rink will open within three weeks. And I don't think that theese paints are easily available in my country
And now, in Switzerland we get the hottest June since 50 years

The letters on a white substance might have been the pattern. We get patterns from Budweiser that are printed on tyvek and then pounced. I also once painted logos on ice where the lines and circles were done with crepe paper.

I received more information from the ice rink guy. It seems they just put an unusued printed nylon banner in the ice. For the lines they are painted on the concrete base.
