Bruce, I got your snotty email. I understand about buying fonts. I am trying to find this one as a favor to a friend who is having a benefit for a organization called Ecuadent, where doctors and dentists go to Ecuador and work for free for three weeks. I am already providing things at cost for him and was just trying to match the font he used on the invitations (he uses Mac, I use PC), so I was hoping to not spend any more on this. Your cowardly way of going about things is sad -- trying to look to others as though you're helping and then sending me this: "Sam, kram, whoever you am.... Chilada is an Adobe font. I paid for mine. You can do likewise. A-D-O-B-E.... Don't be a mooch. Have a great one. DrCAS"

Sam, I believe what are you are now doing is called "playing your Punk Card". No one can question your motives when it is for charity, right? Regardless of what transpired between you and Bruce, you are asking for a font that normally is bought. If it is for charity, fine, have someone donate to buy the font, or someone type and convert to curves what you need. The font merchants rightly get peeved about this sort of thing, being that it is how they make their living.

I was curious about the site that Captain Ken recommended ... The Font Finder Forum site ... and decided to check it out.
I started checking out all the posts to see how the font thing was handled on that site, being as it was ALL about that subject. I noticed that most there just pointed someone to where the font could be got or bought, rather than emailing it to them.
I found something rather interesting also. About midway down on their bb is a post entitled, "ATTENTION FONT FINDER HELPERS" ... in all caps, ... to convey the urgency of it's message.
It was posted by the moderator of that site, and here's what it said:
"I was sent a very nasty email from several font foundries saying to not be posting font links and/or emailing fonts to businesses or individuals with business interests. The foundries already gave me a warning and they've told me to pass it on to the other helpers on this forum. If they are a business ot business individual seeking a font, they said to point them to purchase the font rather than giving it to them. They also told me that anyone caught would have full legal action taken against them for violation of the master copyright law."
It seems that they have the same issues to consider and heed there too.
So you see ... it is a valid issue.
Just thought this was a good place to point it out.

You're welcome.... for nothing. I am so sorry that you feel offended. There is nothing that is going to ruin my day further than that. Alas...
Tell you what... why don't you send me 24-30 dollars... cash... to me. Hey, it's for charity. Honest. You say you don't want to do that, eh? Funny, that is what you are expecting me to do.
Regardless of your motivation, it doesn't make it right to ask people to just e-mail you a font that isn't theirs to freely distribute.
Case in point... We just did several signs for a major insurance carrier. Part of their sign requirements is that their name and tag line be done in specific fonts. I was also informed by the Graphics Department head that I would not be receiving the fonts from them, not that I asked. I couldn't have cared less. We already assumed that we were going to obtain these fonts through our own means.
Does anyone notice that those means did not include coming here and begging the font off anyone willing to give it up? A quick search through some websites and 32 minutes later (I did have go look at some of the other fonts available and resist the temptation to buy several more) I had both fonts on my hard drive.
One font was from Adobe and the other was from ITC. The two fonts cost us total of $48.00 which was already covered in our bid and then some. We have since completed several other projects for other agents using the same fonts. Bought and paid for, making us more money, and free to use them on any other project that might come our way. What a concept.
You have already stated that you were doing the job at cost which means that you should have included this font as part of the fixed costs of the job. To expect others to come bail you out is pretty pitiful to me.
I doubt that Abobe Type would share in any compassion that others were freely distributing their products with absolutely no financial return to them. I could honestly say that I wouldn't.
If you spent upwards of 200 hours drawing, scanning, editing, setting up kerning and kerning combinations only to see others place so little value on your work or respect for you, I sincerely doubt you would be happy about it... even if it was for charity. It would be your decision to donate your work for that cause, not theirs.
If you understand the concept of buying fonts (which you have already stated that you do), then actually doing it shouldn't be too hard of a stretch for you to make.
As far as my e-mail to you being snotty... Well, I guess that would depend on your definition of snotty. It certainly didn't fit mine.
I didn't post it here because I didn't want everyone here to hear me calling you a mooch. You aren't going to shame me with that lame punk card, either.
Have a great one!

Like I said and Janette reiderated, this forum is for Q&A on Sign making and general sign making related stuff. the forum that I posted is for Fonts such as you are looking for, if the font is available at a free download site someone there will know where to point you, however if the font is to be paid for before downloading it is what is known as a commercial font. So first of all you are asking at the wrong forum. second, if it is a commercial font and you want someone to give it to you so you can use it for you dentist friend, you are way off the mark.... Type designers (me being one) make alot less money than doctors, as a matter of fact if a dentist took 3 months of he would still make more money than me. If you ask me to give you my work to benifit a person who's annual income doubles mine, the scale is tipped just a bit. Here is an idea, I will give you that font and 3 others that are suitable for doctors and dentists if your dentist frend will come to Massachusetts and do some free work for me. Just buy the fon, charge Doctor Goodguy and be done with it, move on to bitchin about something someone here might care about.

ALthough I agree with what is being said here, Bruce, you might oughta be a little more civil to people in your emails. Truthfully, it does seem kinda snotty to me too. If you cant explain it in a nice way, why be rude? The point could have been put across without calling someone a mooch.

Call me a mooch, fine, I don't care. It's just the subterranean way you went about it that bothered me. You were actually worried about embarrassing ME??? Right.
I will be buying the font, guess I wasn't clear on that in my earlier reply. I was just trying to explain my original request.

A customer walked in wanting some signs carved for his resort in Ecuador. The brouchure shows a magnificant facility....I'd like to vacation there. Before the job was completed, he phoned saying he'd pick it up a week late, because he needed to go to Ecuador for some dental work. When he returned I was told that he flew there and back and stayed in a classy hotel and ate in nice restaurants and paid the going rate for the best dentistry available there. The total of his trip cost a grand less than the prices for having the dental work done here.

Ecuadent is a humanitarian undertaking to Ecuador, made up of American dental and medical professionals. The all-volunteer group of doctors and assistants donate their time and pay their own transportation to treat the indigent population, many of whom are children between the ages of three and 14 years of age. The focus is on preventative dental health measures in addition to some restorative treatment as equipment and facilities allow. Volunteers pay their transportation to Ecuador. All transportation inside the country, food, and lodging are provided by the Ecuadorian Army.
Areas Served: Ecuador.
Material: Dental instruments, dental supplies (especially toothbrushes), dental portable units, portable dental x-ray units and cable run units.
Personnel: Dentists, dental assistants, and plastic surgeons serve for one week. Knowledge of the Spanish language is helpful.

Just a question. If it's not just to give other fonts, what about clones?
When I need a special font for a little work, i try to find a clone font, which is often free or very cheap. What do you think about?
