 - I made my own transfer tape applicator, and thought i would share the idea with you. I took the roll protectors that came with a 50 yd roll of heat activated reflective sheeting from avery, and put velcro on the bottoms of them, and velcro at one end of my table at various widths to accept different size rolls. the dowel end of these fit real snug into a 3 inch core, so I had to sand it down just a little, not too much though, you want it to retain good tension when you pull the tape away from the roll and secure it to the table. It works great for me, just thought someone out here could use the idea.

Check Weber's site
http://www.webermade.com/
He's one of the sponsors. I own one and love it.
For small applications velcro on the rolls would probably work but for anything over 4 feet if no tension is exerted on the application then you have a mess. The Weber tool has a tension adjuster and it works great.

Your idea is good don't get me wrong but don't try to re-invent the wheel. Keep thinking!

Thanks brian, I've been saving those roll protectors for years thinking I'd some day make a rack to dispense several most used roll goods at one end of a table. When I do that I'll plan on leaving the bottom spot for application tape. I'm surprised that velcro is strong enough to hold against pulling the tape off the roll. No failure yet on that?

I made mine with 2x4's, 3 pieces together. a vertical in the center with a slot to hold the broomstick or pipe that will hold the tape, & the outter ones to hook onto the work table.

I have an old probably near antique butcher paper dispenser that does tha job just great. It has metal sides and a piece of oak across the top with a spring loaded clip to keep the paper from coming off the roll too fast and acts as a tearing strip. I took a piece of plastic conduit and put it over the wooden dowel that holds the paper rolls and it fits the ends of the vinyl tube inserts perfect. It has a tear bar that is spring loaded that acts as a tensioning bar. Looking at it one would think it was designed for premasking but was patented way back in the 1800's.

Doug, it works well for me ubntill the roll gets near the end and very light in weight, Mario, I have seen these, just waiting to get enough steady work to warrant spending the extra money. I could see where the adjustable tension would come in handy.

here's mine (scrap omega board and 2x4)
 -
clamp two of these to table at either end of 15,24,30,48 inch roll
the way its "strung" so it pulls down then out holds tension
 -

I have about 20 of those plastic roll things screwed together to make a floor rack to hold my larger rolls of vinyl (30"+) ... works great

I made a homemade version of the Webermade and it works perfectly, the trick is the Webermades clutches. Transfer Tape rolls use the same size 3" cores as packing tape that goes on those hand grip rolls like you tape moving boxes with. Those hand held dispensers meant for 3" cores have a spindle with a clutch in it, just like a Webermade. You take two of those dispensers and take the handles off. Get a 1 X 12 and cut it to fit under those frames wher the handle use to go. There are generally about 4-6 holes just the right size for screws to go through there on that part of the dispenser. Screw a block of that 1 X onto the bottom of each dispenser and leave about 3 inches on both the front and the back. Put one dispenser into one side of the roll of tape put the other in the other side of the roll (nows a good time to adjust the clutches so they will be fairly tight) Take the roll with both dispenrs and their wooden "stands" facing down and place them on a piece of 1 X 12 the width of the table you will be using and take 2 c-clamps and clamp it down on the side you want it on. Now screw the "stands" the dispensers and roll of tape are on to the 1 X 12 on your table. It works just like a Webermade. Next time you need to change a roll of tape, you just have to undo one of the "stands"/dispensers. I built mine for under $15 in less than 20 minutes. I now have several of them. All you have to do to change sizes of tape in one is undo one side, put the tape onto the spindles, slide it down and rescrew it down, takes me less than a minute with a cordless drill/screwdriver. I am a cheap scade I guess but it works for me.
