Hi there,

Wnnt into work today to make things ready for my Edge arrival, when trying to start my Dell Precision Workstation 340 it starts "Dell logo" then Windows 2K starting then it goes back to the Dell startup logo.

I called the local guy (have bought home computers, this one from him). He said it was a Win 2K problem, I took out my harddrive brought it here backed up all my job files etc. Then using Dells System CD made a 4 diskette "bootfloppy" tried that but it made no difference, after I had done that I tried to choose the option "R" for repair, and then after that failed went thru the process again until it warned me that installing Win 2K further would erase all previous files. A thing the guy at the local store warned me about. DEll's OEM CD does that, whereas if I had a regular Win 2K CD I could just install over the top.

Another option he said would be to insatll Windows XP over the top, I use Gerber Omega software and don't know about that and XP,

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated,

thanks

Henry....I am a firm believer in having 2 hard drives (Master and Slave)!!!!!!1

My advice is to buy another hard drive, install it as the master and if you want to stay with Dell's Win2k, use their disk to install the OS. Other alternative is Win98SE. Then install all your programs. Next install the original hard drive as a Slave and transfer all your files to the master HD. Then format the slave and copy all the files back on to it!
Now you will have a main hard drive with ONLY programss on it, and a secondary HD that has only files and folders on it. Result:
1. Computer will run faster
2. in case of a virus, you files are safe
3. in case it has the same problem again, programs are easy (but tedious)to install, BUT your files are safe.

Small investment...peace of mind!

Si..I am thinkin like you..I really do like Win 2000 but for various reasons I am thinkin that Win 98 SE is about as good as it gets! Shutdown probs and other minor probs are not as significant as vinyl cutting probs. Anyone want to buy a legit CD of Win 2000?? Naw it ain't fer sale... I need it fer my archives!! along with DOS 3.0 and such!!! hahahaha

The 2nd hard drive is a smart idea.

I have WindowsXP Pro running with Omega CP on one system, but it only drives my Odyssey plotter. I use it as a backup should the Dell that drives my Edge should ever fail. I also have Windows XP Home with Omega DS on my design station. The system that drives my Edge-2/enVision uses Windows Me.

So far, I've not had any problems with Omega on any of the systems.

Dave at Gerber says that there are conflicts still with Omega and XP and they suggest not going past 2000 for now. Sounds like an issue for a step by step from Dell tech. Second hard drive is a good idea if you get the linking right.

I went out and bought a 60GB Western Digital HD today and set the 5 month old 40GB as a slave, just the hassle of reinstalling all programs, stayed with Win 2K, as the machine is set up for that with all drivers etc. on OEM disc.

Thanks Si for the tip, and to Glenn thanks for the mail too. Dell support in Europe is a waste of time....they don't support the software they sell with their machines after the first 60 days, and Microsoft have no interest in helping as like Compaq and Gateway, the software is bundled with the machines...makes you stuck between a rock and a hard place...when you need some help.

That's why the computer gods gave ya two IDE hard drive channels (two IDE ports on the mainboard), put each drive on its own channel, set both to master, move the CD ROM to the second connector on the ribbon and make it a slave, you're good to go AND the system will be faster because you cannot access both drives at the same time if they are on the same channel. [Smile] It only appears that you can but what's happening is the computer flips back and forth between the two very quickly. If both drives are on different channels then data can stream between the two drives uninterrupted.

Or do what I did.. go with SCSI hardware then you can forget about masters and slaves but you get to mess around with SCSI ID's and termination instead. [Smile]

A friend of mine has this neat "swappable" hard drive setup where you mount a hard drive in a slide out case and it slides in and out of a chassis mounted into a drive bay with access from the front of the computer. He hasen't set it up to do all yet but he is going to run LINUX, 98SE and XP and just swap out hard drives with each installed on it. I am going to let him set my computers up this way and run 98SE and XP.
